How Fram is ripping people off...

I was looking in the filter catalog at my local Walmart, and realized that the Fram filter that is now recommended for my Hyundai Sonata is the PH9688. They previously specified the PH3593a a number of year ago for this engine, and then they changed it to the PH6607 (a tiny filter). All Hyundai vehicles (except for some of the new 06 models that use a cartridge type) use the same OEM filter.

The PH3593a previously recommended was $3.28.

The PH6607 recommended next is sold for $4.47 per thimble.

The PH9688 filter is around $5.50.

So, not only is Fram trying to pass off their poor quality junk as a quality filter, they are continuing to squeeze more and more from a (mostly) unsuspecting public.

Why would anyone buy the Fram filter? I have '02 Elantra and the dealer charges about $.50 more for a larger high quality filter.
This is probably one instance where you do better at the dealer. Who would ever think that would happen!

Fram cartridge filter for my car: $9.00. STP(champion) cartridge filter for my car: $6.00. Which one to buy for an educated BITOG member? Pretty obvious

These are the following prices I have paid for filters for my Hyundai:

1. Hyundai OEM - $5.50
2. Purolator PureOne PL14459 - $5.00
3. Premium Plus L14459 - $2.99
4. Motorcraft FL810 - $3.39
5. SuperTech ST3593a - $2.07
6. Wix 51334 - $4.20
7. Valucraft 2808 - $2.50
8. Meijer M30 (Purolator filter) - $1

I have never put a Fram on my car. With all the better quality choices listed above for the same or less $$, why would I?

Please now, someone post the "Fram is not so bad" response.

Fram is not so bad, there's your response. I don't use Fram but I also think your cooling system will kill your car faster than a Fram oil filter will.

I used Fram on my motorcycle for 10 years and worked fine (per oil tests).

Only switched to Wix since I can get them cheaper (1/2 the price).

I don't know if I agree with this one.

AFAIK, the switch to a smaller filter for Hyundai applications is based on the year, and older models' recommendations have not changed. I believe the change to a smaller filter is because of a clearance or other problem with the larger filter. The 3593 is a Honda filter size, and the 6607 is a Mazda filter size. Since both have the same threads and gasket diameter, Fram uses a filter originally meant for another application, they have simply switched to a different one. The price difference probably reflects the lesser popularity of the smaller filter.

I'm not saying that the Fram filter is better by any means, in fact I think the OEM is lots better. However I don't see the purposeful intent here to rip people off.

Isn't it illegal for them to set their own prices!?!?!

Could it be possible that certain filters cost more to make? You might have noticed the different prices between models of all filter manufacturers.

Use the Purolator L-24458 if you can still find it at Sears.

The Wix 1347 fits on a Honda.....so it should fit on your Hyundai Sonata

No, I don't buy their products. I've sworn off all Honeywell products.

This just ticked me off, and I'm venting...

3593A SuperTech or 2808 Valuecraft are still alternative bargains for Hyundai screw-on oil filter applications. If you want BIG, NAPA 21626 or WIX 51626.

I emailed Fram once after seeing the "Oil Filter Study" awhile ago, and the president ripped me a new one. He was so mad I had used my eyes to see the "quality" put into Frams and decided to go with other brands instead, it was almost funny. Never again will I buy Fram. I'll let the oil go to 4000 miles until I could get a decent brand.

Do you have that e-mail still. I remember that the original minimopar study was changed after a complaint from Fram.
