how does walmart do it?

I agree with everything said about the Walmart marketing strategy and how it decimates the local "home grown" businesses. It's sad, but WE are partially to blame for wanting EVERYTHING we see, and wanting it CHEAP. WE drive this business model. Maybe not you specifically, but YOU collectively. So, we must not completely blame Walmart for providing what we demand. Same with RK and many others. In fact, if you want to stay in business, you have no choice, period!
Having said all that, anyone that thinks ST oil, (and RK for that matter, among others) is cheap, low teir oil, you need to do some reading. Now I'm not saying it's in a class with Castrol Edge, or Mobil 1, clearly, it's not blended to be, but it is certainly a very robust oil, and many, many UOA/VOA have proven this.
I use it sometimes, but I'm as afflicted with oil snobbery as anyone, so I like to buy into the hype of GTL and all the other [censored]. BUT, I've used a lot of ST and RK and I will bet my bottom dollar, there is no one living who can tell the long term difference.
It's been said on here many many times, oil, any oil, (appropriate to the application) changed regularly will do just as well as any other.

In the 1950's to 1960's, downtown areas complained about new fangle shopping centers, malls and strip malls with large department anchor stores like Sears, JC Penny and such moving to the burbs and taking away business.

In the 1960's to 1970's, they anchor stores and strip malls complained about discount chains like K-Mart taking away business

In the 1980's through today, discount chains like K-Mart and the remnants of anchor stores like Sears and such are on their death beds due to hyper competitive discount chains like Wal-Mart and Target.

"Home Grown" business has been on a slow death march for close to 50+ years. Wal-Mart may have accelerated it but they did not start it. Now online retail like Amazon is making the brick and mortar model obsolete. Simple fact is most do not want to go back doing their weekly shopping of going to 5 different stores when they can do it all in one or two.

I'm not a fan of some of Wally's polices and they've been stated here. In any case, other stores have similar prices or are even less with various sales. Kmart has Smitty's Super S for even cheaper sometimes. But I think while they may not make much per jug, it gets you in their automotive sections and perhaps you'll pick up some wipers and injector cleaner too, etc. Or even bigger ticket/margin items like batteries/tires...

walmart is one of the last places I can find mobil1 15w50 in a jug.

$24

Rural King has slave labor too?

No, no, no.

It's just Walmart. All other corporate retailers pay crazy high wages and offer first class benefits at no cost to the employee. They also pay all of their suppliers more for their products than they charge the public. Out of the goodness of their hearts. Walmart is the only corporation that wants to make evil profits.

+1

At least Walmart provides lots of local jobs, pays taxes, donates to local communities, and etc. Amazon is just sucking it all dry, but for some reason it's just the evil Walmart on this board that gets all the negative comments. Now go buy some more of that Amazon stock that is sure to fall even more when the antitrust legislation machine gets fired up. Last I saw it was down 35 billion.

BITOGism-

Can't have a thread about Walmart without bashing.

Right up there with other BITOGisms of - The Tires Gods gift of Michelin tires and the greatest car in the world.....the Crown Vic.

Smitty's syn-blend is $10 or less pretty much year round. Regular price is $15, but I've never had to pay full price.

At Walmart, most companies are competing against each other anyway. WM just sells them the shelf space.

I have not seen a K-mart in 10+ years. Never seen a Meijers or Rural King ever. I have 2 Walmarts within 3 miles of me.
That $12 syn at Rural King looks like a great deal for a regular price. No excuse to not use syn at that price.

I'm guessing that Warren uses cheaper/cheapest additives when blending Wal-mart oils.
Not saying they don't work, just that they may not last as long or do quit as good of a job
as those used in Mobil 1 or PP.

My 2¢
