A week or so ago I asked a question about what LC (and FP) were made of but no one really knew. I'm sure the chemistry is a secret but all I can find on their website are general things like made with "solvents" and "special oils".

Assuming we will never know what is in this stuff, how can this additive, or any additive, extend the OCI of dino oil to 10K, as claimed by the manufacturer? I am using LC and FP in my brand new Honda because of the excellent reports I've read here about these products (in fact, I even got a couple miles per gallon more than usual on my last tank using FP, which I was not really expecting and was a nice bonus).

So, if no one knows what LC is, can anyone at least explain how it works, especially as related to its ability to extend OCIs?

First, ask why oil becomes exhausted or depleted. Oxidation is one reason, and LC reduces the rate of oxidation. Oil rarely becomes bad from ordinary contaminants..."dirty," and most likely oxidation, or consumption of the additives, or shearing to a lower viscosity.

Just my opinion bugt I believe the antioxidant properties keep the oil in grade while the increased solvency/dispercency(not sure on proper term but it prevents large chunks of solids from forming) that it gives the oil helps better control TBN depleting insolubles thus extending oil life. I am sure it has some built in lubricity enhancements too.

As for the chemical composition, I doubt you'll ever see an answer without signing an NDA. It's proprietary and kept secret.

What is no secret, are it's benefits. You're seeing one of them with increased MPG. As Ken2 said, it keeps oxidation away, thus keeping the oil cleaner, longer. It also reduces emissions and keeps the entire engine clean. I doubt you'll ever need Auto-Rx if you use LC for the life of the car. And it costs very little.

Give Jeff, one of the owners a call. If you promise not to tell anyone, I'll tell you what LC is made of... pixie dust. Seriously, though, this is one product that has been hammered by a lot of people and all the results I'm aware of are positive and cost effective. It does two things to an old work truck, makes the oil look dirty and keeps the TBN above 5 when it used to sag to 1 or 2, same condidtions. So, even though it does not get you 25 percent increase in gas mileage it's still a good product, even if it comes from Texas.
