I have this horribly annoying vibration/rattling/clacking that has been coming from my car at around 2.2-2.4 k rpm only. No noise at idle. Sounds like from inside or behind passenger side dash. I can hear it loudest on the bumpy dirt road i live on when going about 12mph in 1st gear. It goes with engine speed, not car speed.
I hope this is not what cam chain tensioner sounds like?

I've also heard the CV's making the tell tale popping sound sometimes so I'm pretty sure they're on their way out. would these make a sound like that?

car is 99 1.8t quattro 5spd

thanks for looking!

CV make a click click click sound when you turn the wheel one way or the other say hard left..hard right ..as for cam chain ..can't say

i hate the audi cash register sound. every audi should come standard with AAA and a punching bag mounted under the trunk lid.

The Gates website indicates that you have a timing belt, not a chain.

Cam. Belt; W/150 Tooth Belt
Automotive Timing Belt T306 Interference engine
application

Cam. Belt; W/152 Tooth Belt
Automotive Timing Belt T291 Interference engine application

Cam. Belt; W/153 Tooth Belt
