How do you refill your gas tank from a gas container ?

I watched so many spill so much gasoline over their panel....while waiting online to get gas out here in the Northeast.

I've never had decent success with the built in nozzles. Cloeset thing was my VP Jug with their hose shoved down...

What I've resorted to it just siphoning out. For the SUV, I flip the tailgate down, prop a milk crated and then put the gas can ontop of the milk crate to have it higher to siphon out..

I use a "transmission" filler funnel. The tube is thin enough to get past the little flapper and the mouth big enough so I don't splash fuel everywhere.

Quick and easy.

Ha. What's the flow rate on that itty bitty hose off the funnel ;-)

I have a long funnel with a fairly decent *deep* cone to help - depending on the angle of entry of the tank. I still prefer the siphon versus the funnel.

I use one of these...never had a problem. Can just bend the yellow tube and put it into the gas tank and then tip the can forward.

Though I see tons of people who grab the can and just try to dump it forward and jam the nozzle in. No idea why personally. You'd think people have never thought the thing actually bends.

I do approx the same, but mainly cause I'm too lazy to hold the jug...

Quick enough. At least I'm not stuck cleaning out my siphon afterwards.

The nozzle on my can doesn't bend.

Ditto! Spouts start to leak after a few uses.

John

As AandPDan mentioned, I use a tall, thin funnel (transmission funnel) with no problems. I make it a personal challenge to not spill a drop. I find flexible fill necks to leak notoriously.

Plus that jerry can is a Scepter, made here in Ontario Canada

Scepter jerry cans are all I will buy. Those old style jerry cans had the rigid filler tube, and were a real pain to keep from spilling.

I hate those spill proof environmental spouts. They are suppose to prevent spills, but they cause more spills than the old style. I have never seen one that works properly. I have noticed that the gasoline causes the o-ring to stick the first time the spout is used. They should be banned.

Scepter can are about the best ones you can buy today. I got mine from the West Marine boating store. Other companies use to make the same quality gas cans, but they are not available anymore. The 2 other brands I likes were Rubbermaid and Igloo.

I also have the racing style fuel jugs made by scribner plastics. They are also top notch.

Pep-Boys sells a extra long gray plastic funnel. It is plenty big enough at the top, and has an added section near the top that hold the liquid fine when it is on a slant. The bottom fits into the normal size fuel hole in the fill port of gasoline vehicles.

Remove the cap from the fuel can and pour into the funnel. There will usually be a few drops that spill and splash on the ground, and manage to get just enough on your clothes to make them smell. If you put something to block those micro splashes you can prevent your clothes from smelling like gasoline.

+1

the old style with the flexible spout and vent at the back. never spilled a drop. I have tried some of the new ones and they suck. I mean it is better than nothing, but still. whish I would have known and stocked up on the plastic spouts for the old style. I'm, down to one spout for 5 cans.

Hah; I have an old Wedco jerry can but because its only a measly five litre tank I put it to other uses. It has a flexible spout and the old non-EPA/CARB style separate vent cap.

I fill it with "whatever" oil for top-offs, and simply take off the vent cap to pour it out.

Did the job, spill proof too!
