Maybe let it drain an additional 5 seconds to get out one more drop of oil to compensate.

The point is not that it matters how it is done. The question allows people a chance to reply, to chat, to see that there are many different ways people do similar things or they do it just like you or I do.

And if you noticed it can also start a different conversation or topic.

I never thought about oiling the treads. And a pre oiled gasket in a sealed package? Never heard of it.

Not all of us are car experts or have professional knowledge. But we all have opinions and techniques we can share....

This is another installment of bored ZZMan question series.

I was waiting for the post, Should I use a socket or a wrench to remove my drain plug? That'll run a few pages.

Always a socket!

I'm actually more interested in if Kira is joking or not?

Good lawd I hope so, unless this is a space shuttle oil filter we're talking about.

I use drained oil or new oil on filters that don't come pre-lubed and plastic wrapped. Always hand tight. In ~36yrs of doing this I can't think of a single filter leak or sticking gasket.

There is always an exception. Mazda uses a 8mm hex.

What treads? Filters don't have treads.

I get out my dedicated 3in1 can and put a fine bead around the whole gasket.

LOL

I usually kiss the oil filters together. I can understand using new oil but never had an issue either way.

Reread...carefully. Threads and treads are 2 different animals.

The lube shops I ran...we had a 1 quart oil bottle with one side cut out. Took a regular kitchen sponge and stuck inside and poured enough oil in it so that the sponge was always wet with oil. Simply take the oil filter and put it gasket side down on the sponge and give it a twist. Gasket is lubricated and you don't even have to wipe any oil off of anything. Worked well when you're changing 100 oil filters a day.

Ahhh.... Now I got it.

Rub old oil on it with my finger. Why because that's whats down there under the car when I'm putting it on. The gasket could care less if it's old or new oil.

Another useless thread. There is plenty of oil left on the mating surface. A more important of a topic would be "how many" people bother to make sure the gasket isn't still stuck to the block?
