How do you dispose of your worn out cars?

Say you’ve driven it until the wheels are just about to fall off. No dealer is willing to take it on trade and nobody is responding to your Facebook ad. How do you get rid of it? Call a junkyard and sell it at scrap value? Advertise it as a parts car?

My dad drove them into the field behind the house and just left them there. There’s still a Ford truck from the 40’s, the rusted hulk of my mom’s 57 Chevy and my grandmother’s 73 Pontiac behind the old house. I don’t want to continue that tradition.

You can call around to scrap yards and get a quote. If you go the parts car route just be warned that you’ll get a lot of tire kickers.

In modern times I’m noticing less and less people park their worn out cars in fields, which is good in my opinion.

I know my grandad buried a few in the family 'dump' which was just a ravine on his 200 acres that he pushed a big pile of dirt over before they sold the property. If anyone ever goes digging there's a Torino, Maverick, and Javelin down there somewhere.

Me, I'd just haul it off to the scrapyard these days... Take my $50 and be happy. Although I might try and part out a few things before that, but I'd make sure it at least rolled so I could get it on a dolly or trailer.

Unless you're one of my neighbors, who'll cut the cats off, take the $400, then try to sell the car "no cats no title."

The expensive steel boom in 2010-ish really helped clear out peoples' back 40.

once cut one up & shipped its pieces to Lily Kentucky, (gearbox) to South Africa, (steering box) to Hanover Germany (floor air duct).
plus many others. It took time but was worth 10x that way. And people needed parts. Made me feel better about wrecking it too.

What I would do is donate it to the school I went too for automotive. They accept donations for cars for students to practice on and also for the EMT class to cut up. That’s what I’d do. But the likelihood of me ever getting rid of a car is slim lol.

When my dad died he left 9 junk cars on the property. Absolutely nothing of serious value. 83 olds Cierra full of rats and rat poo. His old 4 door k car and a bunch of others all full or rats.

Only one worth a dime was a 76 Camaro with a blown up 6 cyl. I'm not a Camaro guy plus it has to be smogged here.

Hauled they all off to picapart.

With metal prices being what they are there are lots of people around here that drive around looking for scrap cars to buy. They make you an offer leaving room for them to come pick it up and still make a little money themselves. I've got an old Ford Escort sitting in the yard and there's been several people come by asking about buying it but right now I still have tools and such in it that I've got to make room for somewhere else.

Then you have it priced too much. Sorry but no 1998 Chevy pickup with rust holes you can put your hand through is worth $2,000. Scrap cars are around 11 cents a pound now so that's about $500 right there. You should be able to get a few hundred more on Facebook if it runs ok.

I've never had a vehicle that was to bad to sell, and I've had a 99 ram 1500 with 280k miles.. I think I actually got $2400 for it and that was well before the used car bubble.

Depends on the condition. I donated one to the high school auto shop, they came and got it. Another I got $400 from a metal recycler, they came and got it.

I've had a couple of cars outright die and rust to pieces. In both cases a junkyard gave me $200 and towed it away.

I googled up a place that worked with coparts to get rid of mine as easy as possible, and traded a check for the car when the tow driver came.

My friend donated his old elantra, they came by with a tow truck, picked it up, and that was the last of that.

I only had one car that was used up and not worth fixing. It died right after I put about $1k into it, and I didn't want to lose that money, so I parted it out. It took a while, but I made my money back. I had the body sitting on my driveway, no wheels or rear axle, no doors or fenders, basically nothing but the body and frame, the engine short block still bolted in, and the dashboard, carpet and rear seats. I put an ad on Craigslist under the "free stuff" section and advertised it as free scrap metal. Posted a few pics of it. I had several people contact me within hours of posting it, and one of them came that night with a flat bed to pick it up.

So far, I've had a lot of cars, some with high miles, but every one has been running pretty good when I got rid of it. Have always been able to sell for $1000 ish.

Donate it to a charity that takes them. They will haul it out and you can take the book value off your taxes.
