I emailed Spectro's support addy inquiring as to what the HTHS values were for Spectro Platinum 4 Synthetic, both 10W40 and 15W50, since they're not published on the PDS.

Crickets.

Why the mystery, it's not any propreitary info?

Amsoil publishes theirs, as does Mobil 1 and other competitors. Come on Spectro, man up.

Clearly they have no problem selling their oils without the data, so there's not much pressure for them to add the info.

They seem to do a lot of business with bike shops, so their oil is going to get used regardless what its HTHS is. That's what my dealer put in at first service as well. That was my only choice.

Having BMW as a customer is peachy, but this widely accepted indicator of film strength is among information discriminating oil geeks like to know. Still wish they would publish High Temp High Shear values!

While I agree that it'd be nice to know, I also wanted to point out that no bike manufacturer that I know of specifies a certain minimum HTHS amount in the owner's manual, and higher is not necessarily better. A 15w-50 oil meeting API SG/SH/SL has to have HTHS of at least 3.7 cP, and I'm not sure that having more than that is mandatory to have a good motorcycle lubricant.

With that said, Spectro's PDS is truly pathetic, indeed. Notice they list the exact same 40C and 100C viscosity for both their 10W-50 and 15W-50 grades, yet the VI is different. I pointed it out to them a while back and never heard back either.

lets just say its... subpar

why would Spectro want to list a low HTHS value ?

hide your weakness!!

Where does it say that the higher the HTHS, the better? Does your motorcycle owner's manual call for a specific minimum HTHS value?

This is what I suspected. Another reason Spectro appears to be unimpressive in used oil analysis.
