House brands..

Since my new Subie specs for a 6 month oci whether I need it or not, I dont plan on spending top dollar for 0w20 for maybe 3k mile oci.

Are all house brands, Super tech, Advance Auto, NAPA, Meijer basically same quality?

Depends who you ask.

For short intervals use anything that meets the spec in your manual in the appropriate viscosity and you're golden.

Warren makes a number of the House brands. NAPA is made by Valvoline.

Your best bet is to keep an eye out for rebates and sales. There is a sub forum here located near the bottom of the forum listings. Members will post info there on rebates and sales.

SuperTech synthetic is $15.xx for 5 quarts. Its Dexos gen 2 rated as well, so it has pretty good specs.

Our shop truck has 431k on it. All it gets is napa or proline oil.usually changed around 8000 miles. Does not consume a noticible amount between changes.

Most these departments will also do the change...basic oils w/filter $20 if they bump it for premium so what, get some shopping done while you wait. ...If it panes out to just 3-4K I'd let Wally do a QS Defy 5/20 for the $20.

Buy a house brand on sale or contact a lubericant distributor in your area. I bet you will find something suitable for under $3 a quart.

I run the NAPA 0W20 synthetic (buy on sale) for about $2.99/QT in both Subaru vehicles. Subaru filters bought in lots of 6 on Amazon.

I am not going to be towing or racing or anything strenuous. I shoot for a 6000 OCI and it gets done around that, maybe 7000.

Fumoto valve and the oil change is the easiest you will ever do.

Every 6 months? What year is it and covered under warranty?

New stuff nowadays seems to be every year regardless of mileage..

I have a Subaru Ascent and Legacy at home, they both get supertech synthetic and they *used* to get supertech filters, now they're gonna get Premium Guard.

See if there is a Rural King store near you. I used its house brand synthetic 0w-20 in a 2015 Outback. Great price and meets specs.

All those you mentioned meet the dexos gen.2. They will work like any other I think

Can you imagine the liability nightmare that would ensue if a Big Name Box Store or other well-known House Branded lubricant was substandard and caused early failures?? Now imagine that happening in an era where new TGDI engines are extremely demanding of their lubes with a margin of error a fraction of that of a 90's Honda?

Yeah, that's not happening. No one, not Wal-Mart, not Warren etc is risking that kind of damage to save a few pennies a bottle in blending cost. I just grabbed a jug of Wal Mart Synthetic 5W-40 for $20. It's re-labelled Petro-Canada Supreme Synthetic 5W-40

If you have a Tractor Supply nearby, you can get their Traveller oil nice and cheap. I think it's made by Warren. I use their conventional oil when changing the oil on my friend's truck and it works great for maintenance minder oil changes.

I would use any of the oils you listed with no reservation. My oil selection comes down to old vehicles and extended OCI's (low driven mileage but longer time between changes).

With so many ATV & OPE engines I'm sort of boxed into DIY equipment to service that part of my fleet hence the autos but if I was only autos I'd for sure let Walmart do the Defy w/filter OCI's @$20 while I shopped...that's a good deal.
