anyone know what a mechanic typically charges per hour about? like a range say $40 to $80 or something? I want to order an Exedy clutch kit for my 93 civic lx but don't know how much a shop will charge to put it in, it's like a 5 hour job to do yourself I'm told and they have all the tools - am I retarded to think that $200 is gonna be about how much? $40/hr x 5 hours ?

I would try it myself but it seems complicated with removing the transmission and hoisting the engine and all that. Thanks guys.

The last time I paid someone to do a clutch, it was about $450 in labor (about 7 hours, I think). But, to be fair, I had him resurface the flywheel and replace the slave cylinder, too.

On average, between $60 and $90 per hour. The going rate in my area is around $70.

Why an Exedy clutch? Does your Civic have 450 hp or something??? Seriously! Depending on exactly which clutch you got and how many pounds the pressure plate will hold, it may end up like driving a semi truck/very heavy clutch pedal.

The majority of shops simply charge you the "book rate" for a job, meaning they look up how many hours a typical job will take and charge you the hours times their labor rate (even if it takes them 1/2 the time or twice the time).

$140 an hour for labor? That's insane! My local honda dealer charges $85, and i thought that was high.

Well, I'm a computer mechanic, and I charge between $80-$125 an hour, depending on the job and who it is.
Skills are a good thing to have - be it cars or computers, or whatever.
Go with the flow and cha-ching.

The stock clutch in my 99 Si was barely sufficient for stock power levels, that is to say it slipped at the top of 8200 rpm shifts, I replaced it with an Exedy organic and an Xact 8.8lb flywheel and the pedal feel was only slightly stiffer. If you had not driven the car before the clutch swap you would have never noticed at all, plus the Exedy clutch took the abuse when I turbo'd the car later on as well..

Zee1:It is really not that hard of a job I did it myself, it took about 7 hrs start to finish.

$100/hr is average in Sacramento, at least for good independent shops and many dealerships. $140/hr is not uncommon for the higher-end dealerships.

Personally, I'd consider $100/hr to be extremely reasonable, given the high cost of living in Sacramento.

hmmm no my civic is stock, the exedy was the cheapest/best clutch for the price... the whole kit is $115, it's not a sport or racing model, just some basic clutch but since they are a good name i figured it couldnt be all that bad...

those prices sound normal, the under $80 ones... I would be a mechanic except for all the tiny parts, million steps to remove something, hands not small enough, patience not thick enough etc.... sounds like you can make a killing being one.

my sister in laws friend's uncle runs a shop, trying to see if he can cut me a deal... I've read a little about doing it myself, which involves dropping the transmission (fairly light they say) and removing some other stuff but I get frustrated real quick, I'm sure if I saw someone do it I'd have no problem....

[/QUOTE] $23.46 an hour is still a pretty good living. [Wink]
In whose world?

Adequate perhaps, but tax it to death, and it's less than $12/hr clear.. Add children, mortgage and the rest, it doesn't go too far..

Bet Acura Tech does the side-bizz thang for a little boost. The side-bucks are always the best!
