I was curious if it would so I found a corroded penny (brown corrosion) and put it in a metal cup along with a little pure Auto-RX. Heated it up quite hot with a blowtorch (from the bottom) and was shocked to see what looked like a brand new penny after less than a minute of heating.

I just thought I'd report this discovery. I've done same test with several motor oils and none of them really cleaned the pennies.

What conclusions can be drawn from this? I have one: if the copper in an engine is corroded, Auto-Rx will likely rid it of its oxidized layer.

JAG,

I bet that you would not see the same effect if you mix the AutoRX with a fully formulated oil at a normal treatment rate. Am am guessing that corrosion inhibitors may interfere with this phenomenon.

However, as a coin collector, I am going to have to your technique on some oxidized pennies.

Thanks for sharing...

Hmm, sounds like I should mix Auto-RX with motor oil in a ratio similar to what is actually used and repeat the test. What mechanism do you think cleaned off the corrosion? I hope it wasn't that the Auto-RX became so acidic from the several hundred degrees that it acted as an acidic solution. I did it as a reckless test without much regard to anything else. To be fair in the next tests, I will also restrict the temp to around 210F to guarantee that acids don't form (I'm not sure they did before though).

Oops, forgot to mention some other tests with 2 motor oils starting with clean pennies. Several hundred degrees of temp caused the Delo 15w40 to seriously corrode the clean penny while same temps caused M1 5w30 to slightly corrode a clean penny. When I mentioned in first post about motor oils not being able to clean corroded pennies I was referring to when the temps were around 210F degrees (not several hundred).

Cold ketchup will do the same thing. Should I put that in my next fill?

Sorry, cleaning pennies is a nice destressing activity every now and then.

I think you will find the shiney penny free from any pitting. Secondly, UOA with ARX added usually shows lower copper wear than universal averages.

Personally, I think we should do away with the penny. You always have a pocket full, except when you need one. Besides, if we stop minting them, eventually they will have more value than 1 cent.

Rick20, The military quite useing the penny in Eruope. The AAFES stores just rounded everything up or down to the nearest nickle. THe cost of shipping pennies to and from the USA to keep treasure department happy was insanely high!

Oz dropped the 1 and 2 cent coins years ago, to much angst from the populace. Everything is rounded up or down (8s and 9s round up, 6s and 7s round down), so people were concerned that everything ends in .49, or .99, so it would always be rounded up...always seems to be rounded up.

An enterprising lad realised that small button mushrooms weighed in at 2c, and were therefore individualy rounded down to zero. He was unemployed, and had all day to buy a day's worth of food.

The supermarkets tried to get his practice banned...not sure how they went.
