Is is sham and shame that uninsured gets charged the full amount from a not for profit hospital while someone with insurance pays 1/10 of the full amount.
Here are couple of things you can do:
1. Call the billing dept and ask to talk to someon with auth, ask politely that cuz you don't have insurance, you are willing to pay the amount MEDICARE would pay.
2. Most states have laws now that prevent this kind of bogus billing.
3. keep at them, you will have to write them letters and send by registered mail if they give u [censored].
4. you will get MANY more bills from all the consulting radiology, specialist etc that touched you during your stay. same goes for them.
5. Bottom line, just say that you are willing to pay LOWEST ficking amount MEDICARE would pay. tell em if they don't agree you will go public with this
6. BE PROMPT, as they will send to collection. keep copies of anything and everything and after the first conversation followup with written letter.
