Its winter in a lot of places now, check those hoses, and clamps and fluid levels if you can. Clamps come loose, hoses crack-fluids are low, antifreeze looks muddy, brake reservoirs are low, power steering reservoirs are sometimes hidden near the firewall and you don't see them. Air pressures can get low fast----- add to this if you wish...

I check everything in spring, summer and late fall. Winter is too cold to find "surprises." I was fortunate to finally get the car fully washed and waxed this past week when we had a rogue 60 deg day. Was not able to get it done in November due to all the leaves we raked and bundled. Still want to change the transmission pan fluid and filter though it would be fine into spring. If there's another nice day in December....will do it then.

Ever since I became active on this site, I perform a visual check on the Rav4 about 2-3x a week. Should probably up the inspections on Camry. Feels like new but has 70,000 miles on it.

I always make a habit of inspecting fluid levels when I get gas, and when I'm underneath the car for an oil change, I do a quick visual of what's underneath.

Add to this smart list of reminders:

1) Learn EXACTLY HOW to check transmission fluid (if there's a dipstick). This can involve reaching operating temperature, rowing through the gear range selector lever at a proscribed rate and a time limit after doing so.

2) Urging, forcing, cajoling, threatening-to-use-violence or even persuading a family member to do these things when you're not around.
