Does horizontal oil filter lead to dry starts due to oil draining out? I've heard that anti drain back valves aren't that good at keeping oil in the filter. Should I be worried?

I've had numerous cars w/horizontal filter. (even one where the filter was upside down) and the filters held oil. on one occassion I had a problem with it and simply swapped the filter.

No.

Even a nitrile ADBV should be good for 3-5k. If you're concerned, use a filter with a silicone ADBV.

This!

On a daily driver, a nitrile ADBV should retain oil in the filter that is mounted horizontal. If you car got car that sits for weeks on end, a silicone ADBV one would be better

If the valve does not hold oil in a horizontal position, it is faulty.
It is the reason why ADBVs are installed. A vertical filter does not need one [one that points up].

If you're getting lifter rattling on start-up, or the oil pressure gauge takes longer to show full pressure, those could be signs that the filter is draining overnight and the lubrication system has to refill everything in the first few seconds of the engine starting. It doesn't take a defective ADBV for that to happen, just a cheap or poorly designed one, something that's not uncommon. Simple fix: Just try a different brand of filter. Silicone rubber ADBVs (often red in color) typically perform better and last longer than standard rubber valves (often black).

Hmmmm, even if I find a good filter I wonder if I should run synthetic or treat with a moly type product to help on start up
