Honda tranny whine

Same engine/trans combo in the Acura TSX (2.4/auto). Once in awhile you'll see one come in with the whining noise complaint. And what exactly is that noise? It's the carrier bearings inside the differential. (Diff is integrated with the transmission) Most noticeable under light engine load.

Only thing to do is hope the noise doesn't get louder. If it does, it's tranny time!

I've always been a firm advocate of separating the differential from the transmission. Transmission fluid is generally not enough to lubricate a differential in a vehicle with 200+ HP. As an example, the Acura MDX transmission had an integrated differential that was lubricated with transmission fluid for the 01-02 model years. Starting in 03, the differential was lubricated separately with 80w-90 gear oil. Can you guess which units are more reliable?

Every car model on earth has a few transmission failures.
