Any concerns with a Honda CRV awd 2006 5 speed auto trans that whines in 3rd gear only, 185,000 kms? Some say live with it no problem, others say sell. Your input appreciated.

Did you try using Honda's new DW-1 transmission fluid and do a drain and fill ?

Also make sure you do the same thing for the rear diff using Dual Pump (I think Dual Pump II fluid)

Yes, the Dual Pump II fluid is the current fluid to use in a CR-V's rear drive unit.

OP, does it whine all the time, only at cruise, only with load, only without load, etc? Can you further describe the noise?

Best analogy is 3rd gear sounds like the whine you get in reverse gear when using higher rpms's, it goes away in 4th gear. So again 3rd gear sounds like a manual transmission using reverse gear at higher revs. Hope that helps

And it's definitely ONLY 3rd gear. Quiet in 2nd and quiet in 4th?

It sounds like it's likely something mechanical with that certain set of gears in the transmission, like possibly an uneven wear pattern. I doubt it's something that will "break". I had a '97 Dodge Dakota with a loud rear end. I came to find out that many of them were loud straight from the factory, and that it wouldn't be a longevity issue. Indeed, the truck had 180,000 miles on it and the rear end was still going fine.

How long have you owned your CR-V, and how long as it made the noise? Did it start suddenly one day or has it gradually become louder?

I'd say that with 85,000 kms on it with the noise now, it's probably nothing harmful, and probably just an unfortunate wear pattern or something. A transmission shop might be able to diagnose it further, but it's probably nothing worth losing sleep over, in my opinion without hearing it.
