Honda shift solenoids clogged symptoms.

before it started slipping so badly it was undrivable after a few miles (from a completely cold start).

That is interesting. Wonder what causes that. Does the filter collect junk back as it is driving. Thats why i wonder if it is bettet to drain n fill after a day of having it sit.
I am going to do such drain and fill and see if it makes a difference.
I will try maxlife first 2 drains and if no improvement then citgo transgard high visc. (4.99 a quart). Then try solenoid c since i already have a new one. Then try 2nd pressure switch by unplugging it. Then last resort follow up with racing atf or lubegaurd red.
Then just use it in d2 mode and up

makes a great winter car for salt n snow.
Still would like to know what sensors

The 2nd and 3rd clutch pressure switches.

Replacing the 2nd & 3rd pressure switches, which I did, helps a little. You can also check the resistance on the solenoids (linear, lock-up, A, B & C) to make sure they're within spec. As a general rule, if the trans is acting up when it's cold or hot, then the problem is electrical. If it's only when hot, it's internal.

I found that Maxlife & Lubegard Platinum (just 1oz per quart) really helped. The shifts are quicker, but not harsh.

If valvoline maxlife is dexron ii iii good then is it safe to assume it has less friction modifiers than z1 and dw1?

I believe DW1 IS Maxlife.

I have some of each and based on the 'odor', they're not the same.

Fair enough.

they are not. I tried maxlife, from bitog recommendations, in a gen 2 crv. I like how it shifted, and it shifted differently.

I seem to be the odd man out here - Over the course of several thousand miles it developed mild, occassional shift glitches and later severe shifting problems.I swapped everything back to Z1 and it got better, but never totally. It was a shame; before the maxlife, that trans exhibited no problems.

I am not confident with ML in honda autos. IIRC that was a 1997.

Ha just when i was convinced to try maxlife !

Meep i am surprised you got several thousand good miles out of maxlife. Wonder if it cleaned out your transmission over time. Some have mentioned to rotate engine oil brands for squeaky clean engines. Wonder if that was the case with you ?
But my sis honda already has whatever jiffy lube put in during the flush so i dont think it matters in her case.!!!!

Anyhow you dont want to put anything or do anything that will clean your transmission good because the trans filter is not replacable without selling your house!!! Thanks honda !!!!

As previously stated, use Maxlife ATF WITH Lubegard Red. I have used it in many vehicles including a 2001 Honda CRV and a 2010 Honda Civic. Usually got 3-4 quarts of ATF out and replaced with same amount of ATF and added 6-8oz's of Lubegard Red. After about a 100 miles you may feel a difference. I never had any transmission issues with either Honda we owned... Oh yea, I also did the drain and fills every 20K miles and the fluid always came out very clean and red. Start with one drain and fill and go 5K miles and then do one more...

Maxlife is NOT what is needed for older transmissions, it is a LV formulation, per their own datasheet: http://content.valvoline.com/pdf/maxlife_atf.pdf
See the note in their sheet:
"*Please note that legislation in California prohibits Valvoline from recommending MaxLife™ ATF in certain applications where the viscometrics of MaxLife™ ATF do not match those of the official OEM specification. Valvoline therefore does not recommend the use of MaxLife™ ATF in these applications in California."
Adding the friction modifier will "help" but is always better to start with the correct spec fluid.

I strongly suggest an "import multivehicle", if Valvoline is your poison, this one would be closer to specs: http://content.valvoline.com/pdf/multi_vehicle_atf.pdf
Personally I use Castrol (even higher 100C viscosity), and Lubeguard, but I am not judging others

Lubegard red says it has seal conditioners and friction modifiers.

I have noted from online search that friction modifiers may be the highest in honda z1 especially when compared with dex iii.

Does anyone know how dw1 maxlife dexiii castrol and multi vehicle in general rank re the amount of added friction modifiers ?

I am trying to cure the transmission slip in going from 1 to 2 upshift, i.e. the rpms shoot to 3k and then with some noise i am in second gear. Once in second its all good. It stays in second perfectly and shifts to 3 perfectly. Everything else is good too.

I see you like the higher viscosity of castrol. Its an interesting oil. Did you have any transmission problems that seem to went away with castrol. ? Curios about your trials with various atfs.
