Valvolone recommends both with equal confidence, at least as far as I can see.

Mind you, you can do what you want. But I see no technical justification for saying that Maxlife is not recommended for ATF-Z1 applications.

State of CA standards are stricter for specs and that is why Valvoline itself recommends their Import Multi Vehicle over MaxLife.

What are the California standards, exactly? And is the problem with ATF-Z1 specifically?

And again, Valvoline does not recommend one over the other. They both have the same recommendation since neither one is licensed.

Exactly. And that's the difference between PQIA and Cali. Once explained, PQIA understood the 'LOGIC' behind Ashland/Valvoline explanation of synthetic ATF/ML lower initial viscosity combined with greater sheer stability than mineral based Dex/Merc. Cali just holding to an "arbitrary' and 'old' definition of the Dex/Merc spec. It's the difference between an organization, PQIA, that understands ATF and specs, and a gov't bureaucracy giving the misleading impression in this case, that they are protecting the consumer.

That aside, there's never been any warning/alert for ML with Z1 applications as was implied if not stated. And since the PQIA alert, MaxLife no longer called Dex/Merc. Now called MaxLife (full synthetic) MultiVehicle ATF.

Absolutely FALSE.

Smell is very different, color, really nothing would make me believe that they are the same.

There are some significant differences between Max Life and Import Multi Vehicle...

It is probably splitting hair.

Yes Z1 is thicker and the Import MV ATF is thicker, but Honda recommend the lower visc DW1 and discontinue Z1, so that means lower visc Maxlife is not a problem for Honda.

But as you can see the Import MV has additives that are NOT present in MaxLife...that is a significant difference.

DW1 / Z1 also has additives that are not present in Import MV or MaxLife either.

MaxLife has NO such additives and that is likely why Valvoline doesn't make it the preferred choice in the earlier Honda models.
