I'm going to guess the death rate/mile travelled was 4 or 5 times higher in the 50's...
But I think we'll both agree that the biggest factor in how safe your car is, is how you're driving it...

Well, you didn't, at least not in the numbers we have today. Deaths per 100 million miles are ~1/3 what they were in the 50's.

I would have thought a bigger difference... [imagines a world with no cellphones] nevermind.

Engine management is the most I would like and there it is overkill. Computers in cars really suck big time. 100% unneeded to the consumer.

CD players, ipod hookups, built in GPS and navigation systems. I can think of all kinds of things that work much better with electronic control.

Actually computers are pretty reliable in todays cars and are needed for pollution controls to meet the tough air quality laws..
I agree that the old cars were simple and easy to work on but the new cars are far more reliable..

Certainly, but they are also devices that take the operator eyes off the road... and that is not a good thing.

Absolutely correct. The complexity factor is SO great today I am surprised that there are not more problems...well maybe there are they just haven't been safety issues....

I want LESS not more electronic integration..not only does excessive integration reduce reliability it makes finding problems nearly impossible many times!

However airbags have been around in great #'s since around 1994 with very issues or recalls. A non-issue in the automotive world as a whole, just Honda in this case.

I do have to say I really like the simplicity of my Subaru WRX. Yes turbocharged but not much to it. The great AWD has no electronics just elegant fluid shear.
