Honda oil filter size observations....again......

Okay, so the general consensus is a larger oil filter allows for better flow, capacity, etc... It has been mentioned before that Honda has called for a new oil filter for the RSX and new civic. It is noticably smaller in diameter (~0.5 inches) and larger in height (~0.2 inches), but supposedly provides better oil pressure.....

"If you want a bit more oil pressure, you can use the RSX/01Civic filters on your B-series engine. We've noticed an increase in oil pressure and less fluctuation during VTEC operation."

From the WIX website, bypass settings are the same at 8-11 psi. Taking the dimensions of the new filter vs. the old filter, the volume for the older filter is 26.53 in^3. The volume for the newer filter is 19.26 in^3.

Does this mean than filtering surface area is reduced in these new filters? If the oil pressure sensor is after the oil filter and pressure rises, then this suggests higher flow, right?

I have resorted back to standard sized Wix filters (51334) for my Integra Type R. I do have a bunch of Mobil 1 M1-105s (oversized to standard M1-104s) that I may use up for street only use.

Could be higher flow. Could be filter is in bypass earlier. Could be the big IF--pressure sender location.

since its a honda oem filter, who do we contact for information and specs on their filter? i asked honda who makes their filter and they said honda makes it, but he didint know anyoen he can refer me to for the specs. i would like to know, hehe maybe i can stick it on my honda =)

As I keep saying, the outside of a filter may have little to do with the filter area inside. some of them are half full like cereal boxes.

I just looked at the oil filter on my new Element, and it is what you described. It is labeled "filtech". Supposedly you are supposed to change it every 10,000 miles severe, 20,000 miles severe. So I have a hunch that part number flows better, simply because of how long it is rated to last.

When I go to handa-accessories they list the same oil filter as my 99 CR-V and 02 S2000 take. Therefore, I believe they are interchangeable.

I agree with labman, there was a great Honda "Tech 2 Tech" site which really went through the cut-away oil filters in detail and I was disappointed with the #1334 WIX/NAPA Gold. Nice construction quality but dinky little cartridge sitting inside a sizeable can.

That's why I switched my Honda Civic over to Hastings #LF-402.

More pressure could be from greater restriction ... which could be bad. I'll take volume over pressure any day. Without knowing more about what's going on, I wouldn't play poke-'n-hope hydraulicist by swapping oil filters.

I would assume the oil pressure increase to come from less restriction if it where sensed after the filter. The ECU must detect proper oil pressure before the VTEC solenoid activates since it is pressure actuated. I hope my reasoning is correct since I thought that a lower pressure drop would indicate better flow when pressure is monitored after the filter. I read an article written by Honda that the newer filters are interchangable. I think I may stick with OEM recommendations and perhaps consider using a K&N for longer drain intervals. I was considering WIX too but what you say Bror is something I heard before about their smaller filter cartridge. Where do you get Hasting filters by the way?? Thanks for your input everyone........

Just hacked open one of my Wix 51334. Small media is right.

I may resort to OEM Filtech, HAMP or even K&Ns again for track use.
