Honda CR-V Factory Fill

My friend just bought a 2009 Honda CR-V EX. Does anyone know what the factory fill is for this vehicle? Also, what oil would you recommend? It's brand new, with about 376 miles on it so far. His driving style is moderate, driving mostly on country roads and highway. The temps here go from -5 deg F in winter to 95 deg F in the summer. The manual recommends a 12,000 mile OCI.

Are you sure it doesn't have an oil life monitor like other Hondas???? 12K doesn't make sense. It uses 5W20 and it's thought that Mobil 5000 is the factory fill.

Yes it does have an oil life monitor. I just thought I'd mention the interesting fact that the manual calls for 12,000 mile/1 year OCIs, whichever comes first.

Follow the OLM with any conventional SM spec 5w20 and that 4 banger will outlast the rest of the car.

However, I would *not* be willing to go 12k miles on conventional in any passenger car engine. If you want to go 12k miles, use a quality synthetic like Mobil 1 Extended Performance, Amsoil, or Redline.

Id run the factory fill as recommended, then do a "shorty" interval with mobil clean or pennzoil 5w-20. Then, after that interval, Id go to mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 or 5w-20 and follow the OLM.

Ok, correction to my original post: a 12,000 mile OCI is not mentioned in the manual. It states this:

On conventional oil, I would definitely assume that the computer will tell you to change the oil long before that. Thanks for the recommendations so far. He bought some Syntec 5W-20 and a Purolator PureOne from AA when they had a really good deal on it. Does anyone think that this will be a good oil for his car?

That's a fine choice. Any SM spec 5w20 oil will work wonders in that engine.

It's an API spec for oil:

Check your new car manual, go to the page that informs what oil spec and viscosity to use and it will most likely say API SM 5w20. Can't go too wrong following the manual

Honda wants to have factory filled oil in the engine the duration of normal OCI, the first oil change should be done when the OLM goes down to 10-15% or less.

If you are interested you can look at my used oil analysis in that section which I posted a couple of days ago. Its for a '09 TL and the factory fill was in there for 1450 miles. I am glad I did change it when I did as the analysis came with a ton of dirt(silicon) in it. It is a 5w20 and is a great oil. Just don't know who makes it. It definitely is a special break-in oil though.

As others said, replace the factory fill soon. I'd say no more than 1k miles.

The 2010 CR-V's now use 0W-20, so that might be something to consider. I don't think there is much difference between the two models.
