Honda Bottled 0w20 vs M1 AFE 0W30 - 1.5T

I run M1 FS 0W-40 in my 2010 Mazda 3 specifying xW-20. It runs fine and my UOA are slightly better. I also have not experienced any notable degradation in fuel economy.

There's a bigger difference in terms of HTHS, which is more relevant to the engine than KV. The HTHS of a euro xW-30 is 35% higher than a 0W-20. That's greater than the difference between a 0W-16 and a 5W-30 API oil, so it could be thought of as being over 2 grades thicker than the 0W-20, and more than a grade thicker than an API 5W-30.

These are just a couple of the reasons why I use Euro and some boutiques in all my vehicles. Except one which I’m testing R&P.

Does it really matter given that Honda specs a 10W-30 for use? I think not. If they only spec'ed xW-20 it might matter, but even then, what's going to happen?

Exactly! The ONLY engine that I have even heard of that had an issue with a higher viscosity oil is some of the GM V8's (I forget which family) that had the cylinder deactivation system that **seems** to be viscosity dependent. I chalk that up to a bad design versus anything else.

Aside from that I have never in all my years heard of an engine that had issues or increased wear with a higher viscosity oil.

If you're changing it at 50% OLM, whatever the cheapest Dexos1 Gen3 oil on sale, 20 or 30 weight. The ATS 2.0T (300hp tune) gets SuperTech 5w30 D1G3 at 5k mile intervals. It's got 100k miles on it now, and runs like a top.
