I'm sorting out my oil stash for the next year, every BitOG member's favourite pastime. The new variable for me is the 1998 Honda CR-v we're picking up friday. It has 85k. I have the ARX cycle covered with some Mobil Clean 5000 but beyond that I'm looking at a big blue wall of Havoline Synthetic 5w30. I sorta remember people saying that Honda engines do well on Havoline/Chevron. I have like 4-5 changes of it and I'm planning on mixing in one quart of Chevron Supreme 10w-40 to beef it up, old habits die hard. That is to say for winter I will run strait 5w30 synthetic and come middle of summer 50%/50%. All I really want to know is Havoline/Honda a good combo and is 5000mi/3 months a good interval for the first year to clean the engine up a bit. Beyond that I have a lil Mobil 1 sitting here. My Audi is totally covered...GC this winter and a whole bunch of Syntec Blend 10w-40 for afterwards.

Hondas will probably do well on any oil,IMHO! But, I really thought it is said on this site that Hondas really like MOLY, in which Havoline has quite a bit of.

Havoline is the king of conventional oils. I think the performance between SL GF-3 Havoline Synthetic & SM GF-4 Havoline Dino is very slim.

I also stocked up on the Havoline Syn clearance sale. Like Char Baby said, any oil will do just fine in a Honda.

I am running a 50/50 mix of Havoline 5w30 synthetic and Havoline 5w20 conventional for the winter in a Honda Element. I am using the syn for the cold start properties and the dino to get some moly into the mix.

Plan to get 5k out of this mix and change over to the straight syn in the summer.

This vehicle has 85k and unknown service history, so I'm leaning toward a heavier oil due to the possible contaminate size the oil film can easily handle. My Audi V6 is actually running on a Witches' Brew of Havoline Synthetic 5w30, Chevron Supreme 10w-40 and Delo 15w40. No complaints. I will probally do it again with all the leftover mix-n-match Chevron products I have in Spring. After giving a bunch of Mobil Clean & Blend stuff to my nephew for the I-5 Audi he's inheriting, I can actually "clean" out my oil inventory in a year...except GC.

In my experience every Honda I've had seems to run on just about any rated oil with little difference in performance, reliability or "feel" assuming a fairly short OCI of 3 - 6k miles. The exception to this is if the car sees track or heavy off road use.

With that CR-V I would be more concerned about the quality of the transmission fluid, assuming that it's an automatic.
