The " short, stubby" actually is somewhat larger overall, (greater oil volume), than the 7317. That said, 7317 can be used in it's place. The aftermarket manufacturers are going to recommend the OEM size, likely as a matter of CYA. Honda otoh, has no such concern selling only the 7317 size.
That said, many quick lubes and indies use the 'shorty' 6607 in place of the longer 7317 and the 3593a, 14459.
Now it makes sense why when using a Fram on the Accord, I end up needing to add 5 qts to get the dipstick to the full mark (spec is 4.5). With the OEM or Purolator/Bosch, 4.5 gets me right on the money.
