That's sad news. Honda production engines have exceptional reputations due to solid engineering philosophies and rigorous quality control during assembly. It's the people, and not machines, who assemble rings onto pistons, right?

Guess those cars were built on a Friday!

LOL! Yes! most rings installation are still done by hand and indeed there are friday engines and monday engines as well (those assembled here in N. America and still abiding by the 5-day workweek shifts).

Regrettably, there's no such thing called 5-day work week in Japan (ever seen that news recently about a white collar Toyota employee worked to death 5 yrs ago, clocked 106hrs per week and died of heart attack in his 30s???) so you can pretty much bet that your Japanese assembled engines from Friday should be just as good as the Monday engines...... *grin*

and if you think that Honda engines having such problems, think VW for their VW Jetta engines in the late 90s were having similar issues RE: ring installations too...

Considering that K-series engines go into Accords, CR-Vs, Elements, TSXs, Civic Si's, RSXs and RSX-S's the massive number of engines produced and the number of engines that are missing oil control rings is a pretty negligable statistical number. It just sucks if you happen to be that statistical number. This is what new car warranty is for.

A bit off topic but I sold my 07 SI Sedan because I couldn't stand the 3rd gear. On topic mine didn't burn any oil and I was using DINO

I have to login on this one. You sold your Si because of third gear?? ;-) I've own an 06 now a 07 and my son a 03 RSX type S.
My third gear did as you said but grinddddd. My son's transmission was worse.

AMSOIL 5w30 MANUAL SYNCHROMESH TRANSMISSION FLUID.

Both cars shift like butter and took time off between shifts.

Update on the Redline in 07 Si. 1/16 of quart at 2K miles. I checked again and sure enough I had it wrong the first check while back 1/16 down at little over 2K miles. My son 03 RSX type S 1/2 quart 4K miles with AMSOIL ASL.

Tried the amsoil "fix" and it worked for a while but came back. The third gear was annoying and it's well documented but Honda won't do anything about it. Another reason why I sold it was because its slow. It was kind of fun and had 4 doors which was very convenient. But filling that car with premium was a pain in the [censored] for how slow it was and the mileage was just ok for me. Glad I got rid of it. Any of you have the morning "hesitation/lurching" in cold weather. That was another pain with the 07 SI. Oil wise I'd just keep a quality DINO in there.

Yeah I had more make-up oil needed for M1 then the semi-syn I use below. I only use about 3 ounces with it versus about close to a half of one quart with the M1 as well as PP. Thin is the name of the game. Even when my tires start to wear, my FE seems to want to go up. It's either that or the Super Tech filter I just put in for trial #1, made by the heralded Champion Labs is really this good, and it is!

I just got 358 miles to the low fuel light doing 99% city and I do plenty of jack rabbit starts and drive normal only being cognizant of red lights and trying to coast as much as possible when it's possible. I am going to fill up as soon as I get off work and see what my mileage is but the best I had gotten previously to this Lf light was 346 miles and that was in the summer while doing some hypermile techniques. i.e coasting, easing on gas pedal, no jack rabbit starts. That mileage ended up being 26.4 mpg in 100% city!
