Home Plumbing - Wax Ring Question

I've been doing some early spring cleaning and found 2 new and unused Oatey wax rings in the closet, but they don't come with the plastic center funnel.

Does the absence of that plastic inner piece make these worthless? The last time I had to replace a wax ring, I bought the kind with the center piece since it was probably a quarter more.

That used to be the only way they came a while back. I think most people use the "no-seep" with the plastic. Those wax only rings, from what I've seen, are used on top of the ones with the plastic if the flange is too low nowadays.

It's fine to use on a good flange that's level with the floor

I have had quite a bit of trouble getting wax rings to seal on uneven floors so I now only use the rings that are sort of a foam material made by Fluidmaster. A few dollars more but well worth it. They ever have spacers with them for different floor thickness.

They are also reuseable. Once a wax ring is used even for five minutes it should not be reset.

Thanks for the replies. I'll probably put these into the Goodwill box. I figure they'll probably be dried out by the time I need to use them anyway.

I used the wax from a wax ring to cover the fuel tank area where the fuel pump goes in and then a threaded ring locks it in place in 1993 Suburban. It came from the factory with some type of wax there.

You scrape away the wax with something like a Popsicle stick and the area is very clean (no road debris).

If everything is done correctly, that's the only type of wax ring that is needed. The wax ring with the horn isn't used by very many real plumbers, and is nicknamed a "tilemans" wax seal because they're used to try to correct an improperly installed flange. The use of a wax ring with a horn can mean that you've pushed the wax out and just have the plastic ring to make the seal (hint-it won't).

by the way wax seals dont dry up. I've used many different types and you can use the plastic centered ones or those. I manage a ton of apartments and we usually do a wax seal every two weeks. id use that one.
