Home Depot forcing delivery

with our recent home purchase i’ve been buying direct from the manufacturers and paying the $50 install fee. they schedule a time and come do it. this way there are not questions on warranties and i don’t have to worry about damage cause by trying to snake it through the house. all on the delivery people until i sign over ownership. also, the better deals recently have been direct from manufacturer. i spent $1800 on a whirlpool washer/dryer set that would’ve been nearly $2500 with HD’s “sale”.

Home Depot 'roughed up' my new range/oven unit bought back during covid. Delivery guy sits boxed unit on ground and then pushes it over allowing it to without restraint intentionally fall on its back whilst still boxed. He then cuts box bottom off.

Not good idea for the samsung electricals or glass cooktop. Fortunately it still works but wouldn't use them again unless they are the only vendor left.

We have a 13 year old Samsung dishwasher now.. It still works but I cannot use the 'Sanitize' function as I think it exposes the circuit board to extra heat and moisture. The whole dishwasher will stop working. If I let it dry out a day it works fine on every setting but Sanitize. So.. we are looking but for now this thing keeps on chugging along.

Dave P...... free delivery? Just for sheets and giggles I added a dishwasher to my HD cart and proceeded to checkout. $29 delivery fee. HD wants $50 to haul away the old one too.

The smashed one was probably from the last time they let someone take one home themselves.
All jokes aside, it is irritating that they have something in stock and you can't take it home immediately. Instead you may have to wait a week or more for delivery depending on their schedule while you sit without a refrigerator or something.
You don't know that. Why create a scenario to make a point? For all you know there could be same-day or next-day delivery. There was an appliance store in our town that would deliver on the same day if the item was purchased before a certain time in the morning, To be fair, the same/next day delivery was for items within a certain distance from the store.

That said, I'd be miffed if I couldn't take my purchase home with me. You did bring up an interesting point though. Maybe some folks damaged their item when taking it themselves, and perhaps tried to blame the store for selling a defective/damaged appliance. That would not surprise me at all.

Yup:: ""That said, I'd be miffed if I couldn't take my purchase home with me.""

This is my beef with HD... sometimes they have a decent price but I will look elsewhere for a decent price where I can take it home today.

It seems the appliances make it to the big box stores in one piece but the contract delivery guys are the real buffoons and tear them up just driving across town.

Went diswasher shopping the other day and our local Home Depot now says: "Delivery Required" on appliances. The best I could find was a "take me home today" open box buy that was smashed up. I did not buy it.

Perhaps I it has been a while since I've been living under a rock but I don't recall not being able to drive home with the appliance from Lowes, Sears, HD, Best Buy, HH Gregg etc the same day.

The sign did not state how much the delivery fee was but I would think it is extra tacked on to the price of the dishwasher. I own a truck and don't need it delivered.
The problem is that alot of box stores even though they're huge don't seem to carry as large an inventory as they had. My dad and I picked up a dishwasher at Lowes and took it home in his van without issues.

I would think that it’s possible that Home Depot ships appliances from my warehouse or another building.
Possibly even handled by an independent company.

Many companies sell products that are distributed and delivered by independent sources. One example would be Amazon, which Amazon backs products and handles returns however, they’re the distributors of independent company selling products in many cases.

Just a heads up, my sister and her husband bought a new dishwasher last week. They did not know that now days most are available with the plumbing connections on either the left or right side. When my b.i.l. went to put the new one in, it had the plumbing on the side different from the old one. So he goy it in, but with extra work that can be avoided if you check this in advance.

We bought a Speed Queen gas dryer from AJ Madison online in Sep-2021 & had it shipped for free to AL. No one had it in stock locally. If the local box stores are going to have to order it, what's the difference.
At about the same time, we ordered a LP water heater from SupplyHouse.com & had it shipped to AL for free via LTL. No one had it in stock locally or within a couple states. Arkansas/Oklahoma were the nearest in those dark days.

Who has that kind of storage space?

The last time I bought a mattress, I had to wait two days for delivery. I looked at the tag, and it was made the day after I ordered it.

This particular Depot may be short on storage space, and is using it for more profitable items.

I got a dishwasher from mine; they drove a fork truck out back and plucked it from one of those pallet stacker systems.

If I want to order and wait, I can use Amazon. Local big box stores should know why they exist, to satisfy people who want or need something NOW.

Funny story, I went to Sears 15 years ago to buy a TV. I wanted to look at it in the showroom to ensure the picture quality was what I wanted. Cross shopped Circuit City and Best Buy, LOL.

The showroom was open as it was 7:30 pm but the warehouse was closed. I earnestly wanted to buy a TV but Sears wanted to "save money" by sending the warehouse guys home an hour or two before the store closed. But their "mall exposure" was so important they got that little slice of expensive real estate. For what? Why? No sale.

Fortunately Capitalism works and that Sears went Tango Uniform.

The wife wanted to see the dishwasher first. Lowes had displays. Then order / wait.

Wife didn't care about the Washer - so I ordered it lowest price from Costco.

Not disagreeing with you. I paid a lot extra so wife could look first.

We had a Bosch 10 or 12 year ago. We got decent life out of it but their German complexity makes them unserviceable and unrepairable.

Scott

+1.
Bought a Bosch dishwasher years ago because Lowes made me an offer I couldn't refuse (too bad they lied about 90% of it.)
However, back to the story. After about 14 days of use, the whole control panel started flaking and the LED went out.
Bosch said "Too bad" because it had a 30 day warranty on it. Forget the fact that it took me two weeks for my plumber to give me an appointment to install it.
So after getting a case of the red rump and working my way up the German ladder, they finally decided to cover it.
They sent a Bosch tech out to repair it.
Nice guy. We had a conversation.
He told me that he recommended to people what he had in his home: Whirlpool. He said that not only are they complex, but the parts are hard to get. BTW, it took them 3 weeks to get the parts after they approved the repair.
When this dishwasher dies, Mrs. Tdbo and myself both agree that we are going back to a Whirlpool like we had originally.

seeing that the big box stores seem to sell the same models, i bet there is a central warehouse now that stocks and does the delivery for them. this keep inventory low at the physical stores . appliances are usually large and bulky so picking it up in the store is not an option when all you have is honda civic

also, so many folks these days buy online anyways and don't want to go to the store anymore . most info is online and can get a pretty good idea of what they look like .

a freind of mine bought 2 toilets online at Lowes. they delivered them in 2 hours . he was amazed and delighted not having to lug 2 toilets in his sUV

i ordered a microwave from hd on jan 10th and it just got delivered to my store yesterday , was suposed to be delivered on the 13th , what a pain in the a** trying to heat things up

Maybe they sit tagless until someone buys them? The whole mattress industry is suspicious to me so I wouldn't doubt it.

Nah. It was Simmons back then they had a factory in San Leandro, California. It was visible from I-880. I'd previously bought a mattress from a factory sale at the (former) Spring Air factory in Union City, California. The showroom had a window into the factory where we could see where the mattresses were assembled.

One of the things about the mattress industry is that it's near impossible to comparison shop. Every retailer can get its own specific model name where there are so many variables in terms of spring count, spring style, cover pattern/style/shape/thickness, etc. They're typically made to order so as to not require as much warehouse space for the retailer. They'll pick up at the factory and deliver it straight to the customer.

Could you imagine BITOG buying car batteries this way? 😁
