I haven't really looked at the price of conventional oil for a good 6 months+ now. I don't use it as a rule so I don't really pay much attention to it. I use( cars, boats, yard equipment, etc... )and follow the price of the high end synthetics and specifically RP which has remaind pretty stable over that time frame( following a BIG jump last year ). I know I did complain last summer when I bought some GTX that the price was up to $4 for conventional oil. That was the last time I really looked. As big a shock as that was today was an even bigger one!

Today I was at the local PepBoys as they had another 5 qts RP + RP oil filter special going( see rebates and promotions forum for details ). Didn't really need it but figured at the price being offered it was worth grabbing an OC for the future. While I was there I grabbed an OC for my Sister's Impala as they had 5 qts of Castrol HM w/ a PureOne for $24. A good deal with prices what they were at least last time I had looked( even better now ).

So I grabbed my RP oil and then went over to the conventional racks to grab some for my Sister and I about fainted when I saw the regular prices. Conventional oil running upwards of $6.59 a qt. They must be freakin INSANE! That is what the name brand synthetics were selling for just a year ago.

I know crude is up and I know prices on everything we buy are going to go up over the years but this is just crazy. Make the madness stop. At the rate oil prices are rising it is getting to the point in the not so far off future you will be over $50 to do an OC with conventional oil. Not 2 years back people said if you paid $50 for top end synthetics you were paying too much.

Normal for here too. When we have to buy out dino oil for a customer that has to have a certain brand we get charged about 6.50 a quart from O'Reillys, we usually get charged 8.99-12.99 a quart if we buy out Mobil 1 for a customer.

I get it that the prices are now "normal". That wasn't my point. My point is $6.59 freakin bucks a qt for conventional oil is INSANE!

Unless you get it on sale you have no choice.

The 5 QT jug of PP at Walmart for $22 is a bargain then. The PU is $28 (if you can find it). Rotella T is $13 for 1 gallon at Walmart. I am going to buy a case of gallons at Sams of Rotella T. Given my diesel pickup and Bobcat I will use it.

Quite right; that is why I racked up on the MS5K when AZ and OR had it on special for $9.99 for 5QTs plus a filter. Sold all of the filters and got my price down to about $1.60 per QT (not counting the $5.00 rebates I collected from OR). I have never "hoarded" before, but this deal was too good to pass up--especially when some of the guys were predicting this and now in light what you are now seeing, I feel good about it.

If you are stuck on one brand, at one store, with no flexibility on when you buy, then what has been described is normal. If you aren't fixed on brand, then under 3 a quart is easy.

PepBoys isn't very representative of oil prices anyway, at least in my opinion. You can go to Walmart and get 5 quarts of Pennzoil Yellow Bottle for about $16. Add a Purolator Classic white can filter for $3.47 and you have a very high quality oil change for less than 20 bucks. Hard to beat.

I just call O'Reilly's and tell them what I need and have them price match Walmart. If they dont have it they will next day. I just picked up 4 cases (16 gallons) of Chevron Delo 400 LE Synthetic 5W40 for $19.98 a gallon that way. Whats that... $5 a Quart for an HDEO Synthetic?

Walmart? They never have enough oil and its easier to get it from O'reilly's.

Actually crude prices have fallen dramatically in the past month, now just about 83$/barrel.

If anything motor oil should be dropping like a lead weight in price.

While I do see the point about those 5qt jugs I am talking about the price of individual qt bottles at stores not named WalMart. The 5qt jugs at WalMart are something others can't get and/or sell for the same price. Also, not everyone needs or wants to buy 5qt jugs. WalMart has it's own little oil monopoly so to speak when it comes to those 5qt jugs though and you really can't use them when comparing prices to other sources. However, with all of that said, the next time you are at WalMart buying a 5qt jug look over at the individual qt bottles for the same oil and see what they cost.

Around here PepBoys has the same p/qt price as any other parts store( AZ, AAP, VIP, Napa, Robbins, Sanels, Parts+, etc... ). They are no more expensive than anyother parts store here.
