Rules that that are pretty ridiculous. An HOA can have some pretty decent rules without making them ridiculous.

They don't. A gated community would absolutely need an HOA.

There was a controversy over an HOA in San Francisco that apparently didn't pay its $14 a year property tax for the common areas. The homes there are selling for around the $10-15 million range. Their accountant retired and the bill wasn't properly forwarded. Their common areas were sold at a tax sale for about $90,000. Then it got weird. They owed less than $1000 and nobody from the City and County of San Francisco tried to physically find someone to tell. I mean - these people are so rich that any of them could have paid the bill with cash in their wallet.

But any fancy gated community with private streets and security guards will have an HOA.
 
I don't think one needs to live in an HOA so that neighbors don't have cars dismantled on jack stands. Just don't move into the ghetto in the first place.

I live in an average neighborhood, NO HOA, no one has cars on jack stands. If there is, it's just for a day while they fix something, very rare.

Here's my neighborhood, look at street view. It wouldn't take a genius to figure out which house is mine...

I used to live in an HOA community. NEVER again. I live in the USA for a reason, FREEDOM. My HOA was like a dictator, anyways.

The HOA sounded like a great idea at first: control people from parking junk cars out front, make sure all yards were tidy, security patrols at night, maintain a clean peaceful community, yada yada yada.

Neighbors complained about each other all the time, the security patrols were more for looking for policy violations rather than actual security, you had to request if you wanted to plant new flowers, couldn't have flags out front, couldn't leave garage door open for more than fifteen minutes, etc.
 
I live in an HOA but it is non-existent. They take care of the front lawns and I actually wish they would be a little more strict, some of the neighbors could be a little more "tidy".

Of the 4 houses I've owned, only one wasn't in an HOA and I wish it had been.

I hear you! Although I’ll bet your attitude of independence will be altered when you discover that a lien has been placed on your house for the weekly fines that have added up because you chose to ignore them.
 
just fly the flag and be done with it. so you get a letter from the hoa, oh well, let them keep coming.

do you have a mailbox out on the road? If so, I would just attach metal pole to it, fly the flag there. Not on the house so go pound sand.

Yep. Except in this case it doesn't apply because the HOA owns the land and the owner has a percentage interest in the HOA so the HOA can tell him what to do. If he got enough owners together, they can change the rules.

It is kind of ironic though how they consider someone having their hood open and car up on a jack and stands for a brief oil change or wheel/tire setup changeover as 'trashy' or 'low life' enough to be a fineable offense, but it is A OK to have a big, rusty, ***** construction dumpster taking up FOUR sometimes needed parking spots for MONTHS at a time, in the common parking areas.

Hey, that mean's its time to get your own and turn it into a dumpster pool.
 
My advice would be to hang it and see what happens. There are a lot of rules and laws in our land that most ignore and nothing is ever done about it. You will not know unless you try.

I live in an HOA which has reasonable bylaws and low HOA dues, and I think the good definitely out weighs the bad. It keeps the houses and lots in this neighborhood from continually declining because people are too lazy to mow and weed their lawns, keep their house painted, park junked cars with flat tires on the streets, and kinds of other nonsense like that. If you live in a neighborhood where people can do whatever they want, chances are you're going to have some neighbor doing all kinds of crazy stuff that you're probably not going to like at some point.

Also, if you live inside a city limits, the city will also have all kinds of rules for residences to follow.


We don't live in an HOA, and our neighborhood is fine. We have none of the junk cars in yards, or people who don't take care of their yards or property in general, everyone here has enough pride in their places to keep them up...

If you signed a contract with an entity, and agreed not to do something, and agreed that they could levy fines against you, then yes, they absolutely CAN tell you what to do, even though you own the land and the house.

Because you agreed to the terms and conditions of the contract when you signed it.

An HOA is a contract. Breaking it, or just dishonoring it, can be problematic.

Well that's different, if you live on rented land you gotta do as your landlord tells you.


If you move house in the future, be sure to buy the land your house is built on. Otherwise you're buying and renting at the same time which is stupid.
