HOA says no US flag

Why not just put the flag up in the back of the house if you want to hang it from the side of the house?

I remember my HOA (still own the townhouse as a rental) CC&R had terms that said no motorcycles and no pickup trucks larger than "half ton" other than parked temporarily (less than 24 hours). I suppose it was written in the 70s when those were considered "working class" vehicles that might bring down the value. Nobody really paid attention to it. I had a friend renting a room in my house that had a motorcycle.

I brought it up as an HOA meeting once and nobody had heard of the rule. If it was against the rules but nobody bothered to enforce it I suppose it wouldn't be an issue.

American flag only? Yeah - I read through enough to get that it was any flagpole mounted to a house.

However, I was thinking about various things dealing with the People's Republic of China and the use of the nationalist Republic of China flag. There have been various complaints by PROC delegations to the Olympic Games about display of the nationalist flag at times. I remember one apartment owner in Sydney thought that he would get in the spirit by buy a collection of international flags and displaying them on the side of his building. Someone in the PROC official delegation took offense and apparently they made a formal request to the IOC or maybe the local government that the flag be taken down. It apparently wasn't as it was private property and the owner was free to display whatever he wanted.

However, during the London Olympics there was a nationalist ROC flag displayed on a public square and they did take it down after a request from the Chinese embassy.

During the 2012 Olympics in London, Taiwan's flag was taken down from a public display on the city's famous Regent Street and replaced with the "Chinese Taipei" flag after a complaint from the Chinese embassy.

This is what my HOA rules say about flags:

"One flag holder attached to the house is allowed without prior approval. Any other must comply with National Flag display guides, the Washington Administrative Code and requires an ARC application."

I like the "National Flap display guides" (whatever they are) because slobs fly the American flag at night UNLIGHTED.
The same slobs fly the flag during the rain. That's bad too.
The same slobs fly tattered, neglected (dirty) American flags.

grampi asked, "You don't get out much, do you?". That's a foolish, trite prerecorded thing to say.

This thread showed clearly what a "tempest in a teapot" is. People wrapping themselves in the flag when the flag wasn't the subject.

So i'll repeat. Grow up with this silly "pseudo super protector of the American flag" nonsense. The property is a managed one. Some agreements still have bans on satellite receiving dishes. Those rules were written when dishes were 8' in diameter. Also, the "association" may have been taking kickbacks from a cable provider.

See gramps, I do get out some. I also don't make knee-jerk responses to complicated situations. Also, I know the meaning of words.

"Gosh-gee-willikers the gay Mexicans can fly their flag why can't I?" Really try to get smarter as well as grow up. There's so much serious stuff which needs our brain time.

Does this count as a flame?

If you don't feel up to that, then there is always expressio unius est exclusio alterius. Find something that is not prohibited, and just do that. No one can possibly think up a rule against everything.

Maybe you can get one of those projector things to illuminate your house in Old Glory at night.

Good point.

Is there a rule prohibiting paint colors on your home OP?

If not, perhaps if you painted your front door or garage door as a US flag, the HOA might be willing to negotiate..

On a Jeep board, an HOA told a guy he couldn't keep his work truck in his driveway (just a 3/4 ton pickup).

He read the rules, and went and bought a late 70's caddy in horrible shape, spray painted it funky colors, and cut the mufflers off. Parked it in the driveway, and cruised the neighborhood every afternoon in it. None of those violated any HOA rules.

Didn't take long before they changed the rule to allow his pickup to be parked in the neighborhood.

Well they MIGHT have changed the rule not to allow late 70's caddy's in horrible shape, spray painted in funky colors, with the mufflers off, assuming there aren't any state or federal regs they could invoke, which seems unlikely.

Its tough to beat THE MAN

I got a bit of this when I lived on campus. New President didn't like the look of my car, and tried (through the chain of command) to tell me I couldn't park it overnight. I countered (through the chain of command) that I lived on campus, and were they seriously going to invoke that rule for ALL residents?

Bit of a pause, then I was told I must produce the registration documents for inspection. This had never been known to happen to anyone else in the history of the institution (I asked around)

Being Taiwanese they wouldn't be able to concieve that an old scruffy car could be officially road-worthy. I stalled a bit, to encourage them, and then at the final deadline produced my shiny documents.

Ta da! Table of Taiwanese red tape overturned to entangle tormentors.

But they generally get you in the end.

Nope. Just a bunch of nonsensical gibberish, written by a person suffering with perhaps a hint of mental illness, in my estimation.

If you put this flag up I implore and beg you to either light it properly at night OR take it down daily. I cannot stand the lazy Americans who fly the flag but cannot do the proper work and respect for it at night. My grandfather put me through a daily ritual of pulling down flag and folding correctly as a kid spending summers in NH.

Basically don't be a half baked American.

I didn't realize being American had anything to do with the flag. Being born here makes most of us lucky enough to be American. To me loving country means loving what it stands for and the people who comprise its population.

No, more like government versus private contracts. Burning the flag is legal as it's be the government that would arrest you. I think if you did it inside a building, it'd probably be illegal as it'd be against fire code. Outside is probably fine unless there's a fire ban. HOA's aren't the government and the government hasn't made any laws that explicitly grant the right to fly it anywhere so private entities can ban it if they want to. Remember laws always take away rights. Can't have it both ways, a law allowing it to be flown anywhere would infringe on HOA's, landlords etc who would normally have the right to control their property as they see fit.

This is a straw man argument.
You aren't going to find people doing stupid things in reasonably upscale communities of owner occupied homes, HOA or not.

he he he, i'd be tempted to weld up a pole that attaches to the rear of the house and goes over the roofline, and bends down matching the roof line to hold the flag in front of the home! Square tubing painted to match the roof shingles.

I cannot even work on my own car (defined as even so much as having the hood open, let alone a jack/stands under it), in MY OWN DRIVEWAY according to my HOA rules, at the penalty of an exponentially increasing fine for each infraction, starting at $100.00 initially.

I AM allowed to wash/wax it though.

My brother got in trouble with his HOA for adding windshield wiper fluid and old lady in golf cart saw him.

His house is over $1M , I told him to read the rules of what he can and can't do.

Why did you agree to this?
My name is on my mortgage not some HOA and unless they are making my mortgage payment each month,I will do what I want.
I guess some folks need a Mommy to tell them what they can and can't do.
Silly.
