Previous PDS

KV @ 100C: 14.9
KV @ 40C: 100.4
VI: 155
Pour: ?
Flash: 455 F
TBN: 10.7
HTHS: ?

New PDS dated 9-2010:

KV @ 100C: 14.5
KV @ 40C: 97.9
VI: 153
Pour: ?
Flash: 419
TBN: 10.7
HTHS: 3.8
API CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS/CI-4/CH-4/CG-4/ SM/SL/SJ
ACEA E7

Looks like it got a bit lighter. Flash point fell by about 10% but they are now publishing the HTHS figure. It's not API SN.

Anyone know what prompted the change or what may have changed in the blend?

Mobil basically reformulated the whole product line, or most of it.

Cold performance is not too good on TDT, fwiw.

Comparing to Delvac 1 ESP 5w40, it looks like Delvac is now slightly heavier that TDT -- used to be the other way around. I just verified that Delvac 1's formula has not changed recently.

Why do you say that?

Delvac 1's pour point is one of the best I've ever seen for a 5w40 at -54 F, FWIW. And a long time ago, the two oils were actually identical (relabeled).

Gee the M1 10w-30 HM has/had 3.6 HTHS, 3.8 a bit low for a 40 CI oil isnt it? Bye bye majority PAo base in the premium in the M1 oils. Maybe the excessive iron sloughing will subside a bit ....

Amsoil Euro 5w40 has an HTHS of 3.7. Pennzoil Ultra Euro is 3.68, Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme is 3.8. I wouldn't say 3.8 is low, but there are definitely 5w40s with HTHS above 4.0.

You should check the HTHS of Euro 0/5w-40 oils. They're junk too I guess.

Yes, you picked the WRONG oil to run in your VW - now dont you feel silly?

I would say 5w-40 oils are hard to build to be robust, given we can hardly make a 5w30 oil to stay in grade. But, Hey, if the engine will live on 3.8 hths, then no prob. Any pass car engine should - it'a Med Duty C.I. trucks I'd worry about ... and your modded vw ... poor thing!

If the oil in question still passes CJ-4 and other specs, what's the issue? TDT had an HTHS of 3.9 before.

Let's look at at Valvoline Premium Blue. Does anyone here really think it's junk oil? Must be! 3.8 HTHS.

Yes TDT has been watered down. It used to be my oil of choice but now I see no reason to use it over Rotella T6. I wish Delvac 1 or Delo 5w40 was more accessible around here. The only place I have seen those is at truck stops for $35 per gallon.

Ayup. This happened in 2007 when TDT stopped being the same as D1. (the CJ-4 reformulation)

Your comment - not mine. 5w-40 Should be yards better than a 5w30 GF4/5 in an engine that needs a medium-high HTHS to live - like light duty diesel and 100HP/l turbo engines.
