History of Supertech oil

I remember ‘99-01 all my cars were beaters and used oil. When Weatern auto went out of business in town, I lost my inexpensive source of decent sub 1$/quart oil. When that stock of 10w-30 and -40 ran out, I drove to Walmart for oil. I think Tech 2000 was $4.97 for 5 quarts. I was skeptical of the quality, nobody I knew used it, but it worked just fine. Pennzoil conventional was my boutique oil if I had extra cash, but usually I didn’t. I remember when the name changed to Supertech, the price went up, and I again was skeptical. About that time, I could afford the Pennzoil and turned my nose up at the Supertech.

I believe that we kept the Tech 2000 name up here at Canadian Walmarts for a few years longer before we ended up with Supertech
There was also Tune It!, somewhere in between the two; I recently opened an 18.9L pail of Tune It! 🤣

Does anyone know what year Supertech oil first came out?

Sorry if this has been asked before, I didn’t have any luck searching it.

AI says 1989, but I’m sometimes leary of their information.

Thanks
Asking what is the history of SuperTech oil is like asking what's the history of Kirkland Signature oil, FRAM oil or NAPA oil.

Tech 2000 goes back at least until the late 1980's. I can remember buying that oil and the same branded oil filters that came in a clear plastic shell packaging back home in Arkansas when most of the country had not even heard of a Walmart with K-Mart and Sears being the big retail chains.

I personally don't recall seeing it on the local shelves until the late 00s-early 2010s. I'm not sure if it was a regional thing or not, but my local Walmart doesn't have a TLE/auto center either, so that could've been it too. I remember getting the Supertech air filters shortly after, but it was a while before we got the Supertech oil filters.

LOL I just couldn’t think of a better way to phrase it.

Maybe, what year did Supertech/Tech 2000 hit the market?

I think there's a few bottles of Tech 2000 gas line antifreeze in my garage somewhere. I remember my dad putting that stuff into every tank of our VW Fox during winter. Also, wasn't Tech 2000/Supertech oil in Canada made by Safety Kleen for the longest time? Kind of unfortunate that it isn't anymore. I liked the idea of a very affordable oil that meets API specs that also happens to be recycled. I'd throw that into my Corolla.

Yes! I have a bottle of Tune It! car wax. Walmart Canada website shows exactly three Tune It! products still available that must be old stock. 2 stroke oil on clearance, floor mats, and a grocery bag hanger thing.
