Your method works fine. I'm just saying that it doesn't matter. The battery-end of the negative terminal is the same, electrically, as any ground.

He said he wanted to check for a battery draw when off (see title of thread). How could a poor cable connection cause that? If he wanted to check for excessive current draw when cranking, then yes, the cables/connections should be checked.
