High RPM to Remove Carbon

The only 4 cylinder sound I ever heard that sounded sweet, was when I first saw and heard a Honda 750, 4 cylinder motorcycle crack the throttle back in 1969.

Everyone looked, because no one had ever heard that sound before coming from a motorcycle. It had both the Harley's and the "wing-ding-ding" sound of the 2 strokes beat 11 ways to Sunday.

I generally don’t like the sound of a 4 cylinder with an aftermarket exhaust system but the exception is the boxer engines in Subarus. My sons 2002 WRX has a nice growl to it and there are a lot of modified Subarus in my area that sound really nice when I hear them on the road near my condo

Get off my lawn much? Nothing like hurting someone's feelings in their V8 (that does sound good BTW) in my 1.8L @~400hp with "enhanced" exhaust...I can post drag and track videos until the cows come home...laughing...
To each their own I guess.
And you're never getting that ball back.

Though you may not have noticed - a Gran Torino is a Coupe - not a Sedan.

Never said they sounded good - a V8 will always sound great, but the "kids today and their 4 banger w/fart can mufflers" is tired. Some really fast turbo 4s now that have no issue pounding NA V8s that may sound fantastic but are "slow" by today's standards.

You can fix the growl / burble of the Subie flat-fours with a properly designed exhaust manifold. Then it'll sound like a proper, even-fire, four cylinder. ;)

My Outback approves this statement. I removed the factory muffler and front pipe and went with a aftermarket option. I agree though, I hate the sound of aftermarket exhaust on inline 4's. The boxer's unique exhaust note is the only reason I did it.

And agree, Subi 4 sounds decent. My 1.8 sounds horrible and it's why I haven't put an aftermarket exhaust on it....just an aftermarket downpipe w/race cat, the resonator deleted, and factory mufflers to keep it quiet under normal driving with some noise rasp when pounding on it. Good thing I have one of each ;)

The subject was the sound, not the performance.

Funny, I drove my 2012 Honda Civic very hard ( fun with manual transmission ) and the engine never blew up ( even using 0w20 ) , doesn’t use a drop of oil and it’s got over 300K.

I drove the GDI Honda normal , never used 0w20, and it consumes oil.
I run 0w20 in my fbo K20, it's probably going to grenade by 40k miles but only time will tell.

With those unequal headers Subarus have a fantastic note when opened up. For some reason the VW 4cyl don't have a lot of character, but I had success with a vibrant resonator and muffler delete on my EA888s.
Surprisingly my K20 with a titanium Tomei has a deep growl and doesn't sound like a weed eater.

With the MK7 wagons running an aftermarket downpipe resonator delete I'd the way. Anything with the muffler to change out to a free-flowing type resonator or not will have a lot drone at highway speeds. Apparently the Milltek system is one of the only aftermarket ones that doesn't.

I took the Corvette out for a drive today and was playing around with driving at a steady 2500 rpm vs 3000 rpm. In 50 degree weather if I am holding it at 3000 rpm in 4th gear for 20 minutes the oil temperature gets up to 239F. I later tried doing 20 minutes at 2500 and the oil temperature settled around 220. I also gave it a few full throttle blasts and then coasted down.
I’m not really comfortable with the idea of seeing close to 260 degree oil temperatures (even with ESP 5w30) but I’m ok with 220-240.

That Vette says hold my beer at 260+. I track with a number of folks with C5-7s and that's pretty normal.

In Sopranos reruns? I live in the mother country of these things and would bet that the number remains is in the low single digits as a percentage of those built.

These were, unfortunately, known problem engines.
Yeah, nobody posts on the internet when their car is doing great! Except maybe here. I know that there were some issues, and people blamed it on Dexcool and everything else. But to build a high performance V8 engine, without EGR, and still qualify as an ULEV (you know, like a Honda 4) was a feat of engineering.
Unfortunately, and back to the point of this post, the biggest mistake was putting that engine in a luxury car which owners would baby.
That ring carbonization was mostly due to the motor oil not being able to withstand the heat of combustion. And some of us took care of those issues pretty well I'd say.
BTW, I see them every day down here, not on Sapranos! :)

Get out of your comfort zone, you gotta pump those numbers up! That LS doesn't care.
It’s an LT1, but you’re right just the same 🤪 I actually would like to take it to a track day sometime. I used to drag race a lot but I have never done a road course, even though I have a few Corvette buds who have been doing track days for 20+ years now. We have some great tracks around here too (like Mosport, which was the site of the very first F1 race in Canada actually!)

Whatever, LS, LT, push rod V8s are push rod V8s to me 🤣

You owe yourself to go grab an HPDE with an instructor if you have this car, Vettes are one of the most popular cars on track when I go. I am not a big Vette person however, I had an instructor a few years ago with a C7 and it changed my mind riding along with him, I would buy one in a heartbeat.
