High pitched squeal when turning left

Hey Everyone,

As of yesterday I noticed my Sonata emits a squealing/screeching noise when turning left at slow speeds. It only happens when I'm driving at 5MPH or less. The best way I can describe the sound is metal on metal (high pitched). It almost sounds like squealing brake pads but It occurs even when the brakes aren't applied.

I can hear it even with the windows up, I'm starting to think it might be a wheel bearing or control arm. It doesn't happen when I turn right, any ideas?

On a side note my car has an electric power steering system.

I'm thinking it could be a ball joint.

I think that's a common ball joint symptom.

Morning Sickness, power steering belt slipping. When warms up it goes away.

I work in Hyundai service. The most common culprit for your concern is a rust lip on the rotor that contacts the backing plate as the vehicle's weight shifts. Could also be and inside brake pad that is stuck in the slides and contacting the rotor while the body's weight shifts.
get your brakes inspected at a dealer that knows what they are looking at. brake pads and rotors are not warranted for you at this time. they are only warranted for 12mo/12k from the original in service date.

Thanks for the info, I had the front pads and rotors replaced at 25k (I'm at 35K now). My mechanic installed EBC Red stuff pads along with Raybestos advanced technology rotors. I'll have him inspect them.

It could also be the heatshield behind the brake rotors.

My friend's 2011 Honda Odyssey had the exact same issue, even when stopped. It would squeal only when steering left or when the wheel is turning left coming from a right turn.

I found out the heatshield was rubbing on the ball joint or knuckle, I forgot exactly which of the two.

Best solution is to only turn right in future. Since you have three options (left, straight, right) this still leaves you with one "extra" for safety.

Just a quick update, my mechanic checked everything out and it looks like I only have about 5,000 miles of life left on the pads. The pads (EBC Redstuff) only have 10,000 miles on them, but I guess my aggressive braking and traffic stop and go traffic wore them down fast.

He also bent the backing plate behind the rotors but it didn't help.

Should I get Raybestos Professional Grade Ceramic pads or Wagner ThermoQuiet?

Hahaha. Believe me, if I can get a good deal on a car, I don't care what it is. I do try to buy my vehicle's where I work. I am cheap. When someone trades a car in, and doesn't get anything for it, I am all over it. When I can buy a $3-4000 car for $500, I would be stupid not to. Then when it needs work I can flip it for 3 times what I paid.

I ended up getting Raybestos Professional Grade Ceramic pads, having them installed this Saturday.

One thing I've noticed is that the squeal only occurs when the brakes are warm. I think the brake pad wear indicator is hitting the rotor when I turn, but who knows...
