The Uplander is coming up on an oil change and I was planning on staying withQuaker State Ultimate Durability and a Tough guard. Its consumed oil for a while now and Ive came to the conclusion that its about a quart every 2500-3500 miles. Ive considered High Mileage oils but I dont want to have the engine become dependent on them. I know they are a little thicker which might be a plus to slow consumption, I just dont want to mess up any seals with the additives that are in them. Anybody use High Mileage oils LONG TERM with no ill effects? It almost seems in the back of my mind that they are gimmicky. How exactly do they work? Do they really reduce wear better than "regular" oil? The main goal here is to slow or stop the consumption. Would I be better off staying withQuaker State Ultimate Durability or move to a High Mileage? And which one if so, Thought of MaxLife and Defy. I dont want any additives that swell seals, and I dont want the oil do be thick like a Lucas additive. I dont see much on this site about High Mileage oils. Just wondering LONG TERM if it would be better to switch to a High Mileage now or stay with synthetic Quaker State Ultimate Durability.

I topped off using a quart of Valvoline MaxLife to solve some consumption issues on my 99 Accord 4cyl. This was while MC syn-blend was being used. The key is catching it early on. Change pcv valve if it hasn't been done lately.

They have seal swelling agents and extra detergents. The seal swellers are their to counteract the natural tendency for neoprene seals to shrink as they get older. When seals shrink, you get leaks. The extra detergents are there to remove sludge and varnish stains. I should be getting paid for this.

So the seal swellers dont swell beyond factory specs? It seems that swelling the seals could cause problems.

Try the Defy
Good stuff

With nearly 10 months and more than 1500 posts on BITOG, you haven't seen high mileage oils discussed?!? Wow...

Valvoline MaxLife and QS Defy are throught of well here, as is M1 High Mileage if you want to go the Full Synthetic route (the other two are blends). There is now a Full Synthetic version of MaxLife, but not many here have experiences with it.

Good luck avoiding seal dwellers in High Mileage oils...that's pretty much what such oils are designed to do in order to combat leaking seals.

I really never had any interest in High Mileage oils until now, so not really. I didnt know M1 High Mileage was Full Synthetic, ill look into it. But if they all contain those seal swellers I may just stick with a non High Mileage oil until absolutely necessary

Defy in the same weight would be a good starting point to see if the leaks lessen. If so you've found your solution. I'd run it a couple of change intervals if you're wanting to switch back to the Quaker State Ultimate Durability if it proves to help.

I got a perfect example for you: Take a sliced ripe olive and let it sit out over night. It'll dry up, shrink and harden. I'll look like a black Cheerios the next day.

Does Walmart carry it? Never seen M1 High Mileage at mine, but again I was never looking for it.

Have you considered replacing your valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, and oil sensor? I have a lot worst consumption with my car then you do with yours, 1qt every 3 or 4 weeks, and I replaced them and will be seeing the results soon as well as keeping notes. I'm using Mobil 1 High Mileage, for the next 3 OCIs, since it takes time to remedy it.

How would replacing gaskets help with oil burning?

I used MaxLife Full Synthetic in my Mercury Mystique V6 for over 100,000 miles. No issues to report, it ran like a top at 180k when it was totaled in an accident by an inattentive driver.

If you're trying to reduce oil burning, High Mileage oils can help, but if the rest of the engine is in good shape, you could just step up to 30 grade non-High Mileage. A 5w30 should do just fine in a K24, and it might reduce consumption.

Mobil tells us that High Mileage oils are basically a band-aid for engines neglected a bit earlier in life. There's no need for them in a car which has used good oil at regular intervals.

Seal conditioners are a non-issue IMO. Some High Mileage oils are not particularly thicker than their regular counterparts and are "Resource Conserving" as well (Maxlife and Mobil Super High Mileage come to mind).

I think you'd like Maxlife and your vehicle even more so. You can use Maxlife in a brand new vehicle and maintain your warranty.

This post is concerning the Uplander in my sig, the Accord does not use any oil.
