What exactly does a high mileage oil do for your car? Kinda stupid question on here but I gotta ask.... My father in law has a 91 S10 with 130k on it. Just wondering what would be a good oil for it. 4.3 v6....

Mainly just conditions seals, But some have said they have a stronger add pack also. If you wanted a HM oil Valvoline maxlife would be my first choice, You could easily get away with 10w40 in texas.

Well for starters, some HM oils will be a little thicker within their grade than their regular counter parts. This is not the case with all HM oils however. The product data sheets listed by each manufacturer will tell you the differences. Secondly, they will contain seal condtioners to help soften and swell up older seals. Lastly, they may contain added detergents to clean up an older engine with high miles.

Its not just motoroil its ambrosia

I just put MaxLife in the wife's 97 Taurus with 92k miles. Also put in some VSOT. So far so good, hasn't burned a drop, and not a single drip on the driveway. May ultimately go with MaxLife Synthetic in that car and stretch the OCI to 7k or so once I use up these ST filters. I'd run Wix or Bosch prem filters for extended OCI.

Basically, high mileage oils help cut down on oil consumption. If that S10 doesn't use any oil, it wouldn't hurt to use high mileage oil, but wouldn't help much either. If it does leak/burn oil, it might be worth a shot.

I have a 96 GMC with the same motor and 124,000 mi. I used Mobil 1 5w30 since 3,000 miles. At 59,000 I switched to Amsoil 5w30. So far no leaks and no more oil consumption than it has had since new. since I see "high mileage" seems to aimed at 75,000 mi, I think it is all marketing hype. If your father in laws truck is not burning oil I don't see a need for it.

I beg the differ with you on that statement. High mileage oils also contain seal conditioners and added detergents. It would seem to me that those attributes would be highly beneficial in this case. IMO

p.s. I recommend Valvoline MaxLife 10W-40 for this case.

I must say I had the best experience that anyone I ever heard had! I told many people my story but they don't believe it. So I thought I will share it here too:

I own now my 3rd MK1 93-96 Ford Mondeo 2.0 stationwagon with 136HP. My first 2 cars had a mileage of around 9-10liters/100km (23.6mpg - 26.3mpg) depending on weather, tires. I usually drive full throttle and 140km/h (88mph) on the freeway. I ALWAYS calculated the mileage, trough the whole life of those cars.
Now I bought my 3rd Mondeo, a 1996 model with higher gears (there where 2 setups). I got now around 4500RPM (can't remember it right) at 140km/h (88mph), that's very high!
Anyway, since I bought that car with 152'000km last year it was taking constant 10.5l (22.5mpg!) I was really frustrated! I first thought it's because the high gears since the 2 others had much lower RPM on the freeway. I changed tires, the winter came, the winter left, nothing changed on the mileage! It even got sometimes worst, but never below that!
I changed the oil from the previous owner (by the way, the service-book shows all inspections, the car was mantained very good, always got the oil changed etc.). I bought the oil at a Ford garage that is supposed to be used on the Ford Mondeo 2.0 and they gave me Ford Formula (I think 5W-30). I paid 13$/quart, the price almost killed me!
Also changed the oil filter to the Ford filter. The mileage didn't change at all!
Now I bought Castrol High Mileage 10W40 and when I first got gas I thought I did something wrong! Now I drove about 5'000km (3000miles) with this oil and I still got amazing 8.5-9l/100km (27.8mpg - 26.3mpg)!!! I still drive full throttle with that car, didn't change anything except some noname cheap Oilfilter and the Castrol oil!
What is also amazing: I got a water temperatur gauge, that got a bottom line, then NORMAL is written and then comes a top line.
On the 2 Mondeo's before and also on this one with the oil before the gauge would usually show on the O-R when driving on a hot day on the freeway. In a cold winter it would go down to N. But now I am waaaay below N, I am just on the bottom line! That means the temperatur is just right on the minimum of being normal! I can drive also on a real hot day, it won't climb! Just in traffic it will, but that's another issue.

I think engine creats MUCH less friction, and to me that just can be the oil change! I don’t know what it did, I just know I am saving lots of money now with gas since the gas here costs a fortune!

My 0.02cents to this thread…

Hm. I think there are going to be about 15 posts saying you are full of it, while there will also be about 15 people here running out to buy a few quarts of the Castrol HM.

Hehe, as said, I never thought I would get such results, but I was maybe very lucky.

I just said that the Mondeo I got now got much shorter gears -> much higher RPM at the same speed than the 2 other cars before. That's why I thought first it consumes so much gas, although the difference was huge!

I mean, I just paid 20$ for 5 quarts here, noname oil isn't much cheaper, that's why I gave it a try...

Try doing a search for high mileage oil posts by Terry. He doesn't think they are much more than a marketing gimmick.

Maybe the name "High Mileage Oil" is a marketing gimmick, but most of these HM oils have something extra: PAO, extra detergents, seal conditioners, thicker base oil maybe, thicker overall (which could be achieved mixing a thicker grade into regular oil), maybe more antiwear additive. Anyway, a lot of HM oils do not have starburst or energy conserving designations, which allows the manufacturer more leeway in formulating (one less constraint). So I like high mileage oil.
