High Mileage Oil Recommendations

Hello all,

I am looking for an oil that would be best for my '95 4AFE Corolla with 220k miles.

The engine doesn't burn any oil when run with Kendall GT-1 High Mileage oil. However, Valvoline Maxlife disappears at a rate of a quart every 1000 miles. I'm not sure why.

I would like to start doing my own oil changes, and finding Kendall oil individually is very difficult.

What is your recommendation?
Never have understood this anomaly My 2004 Corolla with 146000 miles burns between a cup and less than a half quart no matter what oil I use in it. I also switch up the oil weights as well there just isn't much difference. I just use what is ever on sale that meets my price cut off.

I've looked for Kendall everywhere! It is available online in 12 quart packs. I don't have the space to store 24 quarts (5W30 for Winter, 10W30 for summer).

OCI has always been 3k miles.

In that case, maybe consider using 5w30 year round.

FWIW, I agree ... 5W-30 all the time.

I've noticed that some 5W-30 oils have a slightly higher viscosity than their 10W-30 cousins.

I always used any sort of 10w30 synthetic in that thing and change it out every 7500, top off as needed. It blew some blue smoke at start up by 270k if I park for more than 2 days but that's about it.

Crushed it last week for a $1200 emission credit, it is still running well.

Wow. The owner's manual states 5W30 is not recommended for temps above 50F but 10W30 is. I guess back in '95 VM's didn't work that well and the 10W was significantly thicker than the 5W.

I guess it depends on how long that had been printed in the manuals, some things stick around forever like manuals in the 2000s still saying specifically not to use 10w40, back in the 80s though some 5w30 oils were absolutely terrible and wouldn't even pass the minimum HTHS requirements for 20 grade nowadays.

My 2002 ford f-150 4.6 likes the Valvoline High Mileage full synthetic 5W-20 better than
anything I've ever tried in it. I do not have to add oil between changes using the Valvoline as I
did with the previous oils I tried. Castrol Synthetic and STP Synthetic. And, it is quieter and smoother now than it's ever been.

Ford originally spec’d a 5w30 for the 2v 4.6.

My 2002 Mustang GT ran on 5w30 Maxlife full synthetic and Havoline High mileage.

My original owners manual calls for 5W-20, so I went with that.
Anyway, it's much smoother and quieter than it's ever been.
Thanks for the input though.

My 4Runner is a 2005 with 185K now. I have been using Amsoil Signature for 7-9K durations since I had some. We don't drive much so that is annual though I like to change the oil every 6 months in general. It does not burn oil or leak. I'll keep using that or switch to the next level down of Amsoil when I need to order more. Good to know about Mobil 1 though, since I am also considering a switch to that.

That's strange because that oil is one of the thinnest HM there is.

Maybe the smoothness is the 300+ppm of moly that showed up in a recent uoa,BUT, Valvoline told me via telephone that they use zero moly in their oils.
