We own a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe that was purchased new. It has been maintained very regularly since new, and now has 106,000 miles on it. It does not use/burn any oil, but I didn't know whether or not to switch it over to a high mileage oil. Whats the word on the street...75,000 miles or whenever the engine starts using oil?

No need to use HM oil. (the 75,001 is all marketing

) If you have a leak then repair the leak if its severe.

My 394,000 mile Jetta died with normal oil in the crankcase. It had NEVER seen anything but conventional oils over its life..

Start using it as soon as you can afford the extra cost; it's better oil, with a better add pack.

Think how long Bills Jetta would have gone with HM oil!

I believe the Jetta died of other causes, not oil related. No need for HM oil with extra seal swell additives if there are no leaks or burning going on. It may do more harm than good in the long run by making the seals weaker.

I used ST High mileage to help some rear main seepage in my wife's low mile '04 Malibu Maxx. It worked well. There was no way I was pulling the tranny and such to replace a $5 seal on a car that only had 50K (at the time) on it.

HM oils have their place. The 75,000 claim is pure marketing though. If you don't burn or leak oil, then continue using your favorite poison.

What symptoms are you having with your engine that would make the switch to HM oil necessary? No reason to try to repair a non existant problem.

I use Mobil 1 High Mileage oil, 10W30, because it has a better antiwear additive package, and also a sronger detergency package. It is also, the last time I checked, still an SL oil. It cost about the same as other M1 oils, so why not go for the oil with the best package?

I just changed out my first fill of this oil, at 9117 miles in my 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. The oil still looked good, but it was coming up on a year OCI, so I changed it. It had used almost one third of a quart in 9117 miles.
