High-mileage 5w30 Conundrum

OK - here is my conundrum. I got talked into high-mileage oil for my 2003 Honda CRV with 120,000 miles from one of Jiffy Lubes specials - moment of weakness. My owners manual says I should be using 5w20 but they put 5w30 in it, which I found out later looking at the receipt. Also, I am concerned that now I am now committed to using high-mileage oil evermore. I have not had any leaks and am wondering if I should have them redo my oil with plain oil as it has only been about a week. Thanks

Well, they have Valvoline MaxLife HM 5w20 which is a great oil but the 5w30 will not hurt anything in your car for 3-5k. It will clean things up and then you can use whatever you want after that.

M1 also has a High Mileage 5w30 oil.

Use regular 5w20 in that honda engine the High Mileage oil is good but 120,000 on those engines is not high mileage the High Mileage oils are a little thicker (blended on the high side of the spectrum) and i think you will be better off with an oil that flows better in the cold..
Also you are not obligated to use high mileage oil just because it was put in one time, i use high mileage oil in my truly high mileage engines in the summer but use regular conventional oil in the winter..

You can switch oils as often as you want - as one poster said, maybe go to the ML 5W-20 next change. Or stick with 5w30...doesn't really make a difference.

Thanks all - I don't know enough to be competent but I read enough to be worried about seals expanding and then contrating if I went to regular, etc. Appreciate the input and will let it ride for this go round and maybe switch back on the next.

Go back to Jiffy lube and ask them to drain the High Mileage 5w30 oil out and put in normal 5w-20 oil back in. Tell them the filter is fine.

All High Mileage oil is mostly marketing B S and since your engine is fine (like 99% of other engines) you don't need or want High Mileage oil in it. There is nothing wrong with it for a OCI, but I'd rather not run it and if I thought I needed it I'd fix the problem High Mileage oil is trying to fix if I cared about the engine.

Any 5w-20 oil is going to take your CRV many many miles with NO WORRIES.

I had a 2002 CRV and tried 5w30 in it. It won't hurt the engine but mine seemed a bit sluggish versus the 5w20. So I would go back and make them put ML 5w20 in it. If the idiot doesn't have 5w20 then leave and never go back. JL is the absolute worst place to take your car.

Eh. I'd drive it out the full OCI on either of my cars (and one has the same engine as your CRV). HM 5-30 wouldn't be my first choice, but not worth the time to change it prematurely.

Make them put the right oil in for free. I would make them change the filter to, just for their mistake.

They make HM 5w20 oils. I have seen Valvoline Maxlife, QS Red Bottle, and Pennzoil High Mileage in 5w20

You will never notice the difference. The difference between a 5w30 High Mileage and a 5w20 is not that worth making a fuss about. Maybe on principal because the place should have enough sense to put in what your vehicle calls for. You could almost make a case against running it forever but one oil change will mean nothing. The High Mileage oils tend to be on the thicker side of the w30 scale so there is a good chance the oil has a CtS viscosity @100C of about 12 where your 5w20 is probably somewhere around 8.5@100C. The viscosity where you live is not a concern at all. Im not sure about the seal agents. I do know that all oil has seal conditioners in them, some more than others. My personal feeling is that it wont matter at all as i have seen people switch between High Mileage oils and regular oils and never had negative results. I know three people with CRV's and they all use 5w30 on a regular basis. I know two with pilots and they also 30 weight oils, one is 5w30 and one is 10w30. Im not saying this is right, im just saying one OCI with 5w30 will not hurt your CRV. Good luck. Also i think it is sad that i know what all my buddies and family members run in there vehicles and there OCI's.
