I have a 98 Corolla that I used Synthetic oil in until it started to use a quart every ~800-1000 miles. Oil consumption is normal with my motor so I'm used to it.

Anyhow at 175,000 miles I went with regular yellow bottle Pennzoil, and now have over 200,00 miles. The thing is that most people I know say I need high mileage oil. Is it necessary and what does it do? Has anyone had any real evidence that it works better than what I am using now. 10/30 btw.

Give it a shot. I just switched to Mobil 1 HM from Kendall GT-1 because of a small oil leak from the rear main seal. So far, I'm really enjoying Mobil 1 compared to the Kendall. Try out a HM oil and see how it goes as far as consumption.

I am a believer in HM oil. It stopped a slight oil leak I had..If the car sat in the same spot for 2 or 3 days, there would be spots of oil under where it had been parked, after switching to HM, it has stopped.

Before switching to HM, I had been using conventional at quick lube places, except for the change right before the HM switch. I did that one myself with regular synthetic, and the regular synthetic leaked same as conventional.

The HM oils are said to work by making the seals i your engine more "pliable," as opposed to "dried out," if that makes senses. Not sure if this is what happened in my car , I only KNOW what I see from under the car,.

I have only used maxlife, next OCI Mobil 1 HM is going in.

Did you use syn from the start?

How long did you use it?

According to many here you should not have a oil consumption issue if you use syn. And no way would you have any ring pack deposits (since you do use syn) so I wonder why cleaning the ring packs would be suggested?

I'm not a HM fan (just tried it for the first time in Daughters oil leaker from heck Ford) and it has done nothing but leak like any other oil.

My Corolla consumes oil (like EVERY OTHER engine out there) around 1/4-1/2 qt per 7-8k OCI with conventional 5w-30 and around a quart-quart 1/2 in the same OCI with syn. Been that way since I bought it 6 years ago and 205k on it now.

Have you checked the PCV system?

I got at 78,000 miles using 1 quart every ~4000 miles, but if you follow Corollas you would know that the 8th generation Corollas had this engineering problem, synt, or not. The pistons were not comparable with the rings. It was changed sometime around 1999-2000. Then VVT ruined them so it did happen the same year. Over the years I've had about1 11 Rollas, I'm a courier.
Post that in CorollaLand and see what you get!

I tried Maxlife semi-syn and full-syn in my LS400 which consumes 1/2 quart every 3-4k miles since new and it didn't do much in stopping or reducing the oil consumption. That just means it didn't work for my car, but it seems to work for some other owners.

Since your car uses a lot more oil than mine, you may want to try HM oil for a couple OCI's to see if the consumption rate goes down. HM oil seems to do no harm to the engine, the only cost is it is more expensive than non-HM oil.

i agree i saw high mileage oil work in a number of engines i always used pennzoil high mileage and it worked well if the seals were the problem it is also blended on the higher side of the weight you choose i now am using mobil hm because i got it at a great price pennzoil raised their prices and i stopped buying their products i am now hooked on the mobil hm for the oldies..

I just changed the oil yesterday and put in Super Tech HM 10W-40 and a Purolator Classic. The ST has good numbers and seems to be as good as any of the rest but cheaper.

The ST HM looks like it might be a Mag1 semi syn clone that is made for higher mileage motors.

Yea, I see those bottles at Walmart, but if I bought it and my sisters husband saw the bottle I would get ridiculed. He works at Pennzoil corporate.

Maybe worth trying MMO. When your getting close add some since your burning anyway. HM oils are great but not always save engines. If you use HM and it still burns. Forget oil changes and just add when needed. Change the filter every 5K or so.

If you ever get the opportunity to tear into one, it will become pretty clear what the cause of the oil consumption is, in the mid-90's era Corolla engines. Low tension rings coupled with inadequate oil flow. I've seen a few where a hammer, chisel, and a lot of profanity couldnt separate the rings from the pistons.

I'm the sole caregiver to multiple Corollas, all bought new, and in spite of regular oil changes like clockwork of they each started burning oil around the 80k mile mark, and I havent been able to stop any of them using high mileage oils, synthetics, *heavy* doses of MMO, or anything else short of dynamite, or a cylinder honing and new piston rings. They will run forever, but they will drink a lot of oil doing it.

Keeping the oil topped up and slapping on a new filter on every few months is the plan I have been using for several years on one my dads, and it still runs pretty well, coming up on 310k miles. It uses a quart about every 500 miles or so, I dont really keep track anymore, just keep a few quarts in the trunk and have him check it every time he gets gas. Great little cars, if you can get past the oil consumption.

I have used Pennzoil High Mileage and am currently using Mobil Super High Mileage both with success stopped the leaks and I have a great quality oil in the oil pan.

Toto.

Tell him you will be happy to use any Pennzoil HM he supplies.

Lets see. I'm from Oil City (originality Quaker State) and so is he, but now lives in Texas and I'm in DC. But rest assured, I get perked to death. Over the years I've been at several races in the pit and have driven their hovercraft. So oil is not a big deal for him, but FedEX would have a hard time getting a 55 gallon drum up my steps. J/K!

I'm also sure if I asked him about HM oil I would get several documents in my poor mail box.
