Look, Carnoobie, to answer your original question, you should avoid high maintenance people.

Period.

IF you define high maintenance the way you have, spending hours on themselves, costing other people a lot of $$ in the process, then you've described selfish jerks.

What's the value of having selfish jerks in your life? I can't see why you would want the trouble.

And if a girl is a selfish jerk? Who cares how she looks, she is unattractive in the broader sense....you'll never enjoy being with a selfish jerk, though you might spend a lot of time being hopeful for the physical aspect of a relationship...the important part of that relationship is non-existent and you'll never actually be happy with the jerk.

Pretty is as pretty does...a girl who is solely into herself isn't worth the trouble...

Camping is a great way to show what a person is really like. I once camped (several times actually) with a girl that spent the first half hour upon arriving finding all the electrical outlets so she could plug in her hair straightener.

Problem with girls using heavy make up since they hit puberty is that when they’re in their mid to late twenties they will look 35+ without the makeup. That's why they run off to the bathromm first thing in the morning.

Camping and or a canoe trip down a "river" is a great way to see if someone is marriage material.

If they work with you and you don't want to kill each other after such a trip, there may be a future with this person.

If not, end it now before you get emotionally and otherwise invested.

I totally agree here. Looks will fade with age, but personality will always stay the same. My g/f doesn't wear any makeup and hasn't since I have been with her. She isn't into fashion, prefers jeans and a Tshirt over trendy clothes anyday. She loves old musclecars, likes guns and shooting as well. Can't ask for much more!
