I got one of these a few months back.
Yesterday went to use it and it was rusted solid.
Got it loose and took the head apart found no grease.
Would it be safe to grease it?
Ken

When you say there was no grease, do you mean in the ratcheting mechanism? Sure you can grease that, and then it will ratchet, but I would still have concerns about the accuracy...is the torque sensing mechanism also dry/rusty?

Not this just 90 days

My old roommate also learned this the hard way. Also that a torque wrench is not a breaker bar. It was a buy one get one deal on life lessons.

Whatever grease will be fine.

I bought one years ago that had a sticking adjuster ... returned it for a full refund. I have avoided HF torque wrenches ever since. I do have one of their 1/4" drive torque wrenches that seems to work okay.

wrong,

All craftsman Beam style torque wrenches are US made and carry a lifetime warranty. The others do not.

Don't you think it would be rather difficult for the beam style torque wrench to have its "ratcheting mechanism" broken? :-)

I have couple of HF torque wrench bought last year and one from VIP bought decades ago. I keep them in the house rather than in garage and in their supplied case or box. So far, they have held up very well.

The statement was that all craftsman torque wrenches do not have a lifetime warranty. Not about ratcheting mechanisms. However I never have owned a cheap ratcheting torque wrench I got mine from snap on, never an issue, but have heard bad things about HF and Cman ones.

Kind of a moot point now

The cat attacked it and one of the little springs went
boing I heard it hit the ceiling and well ta ta.

I have a inch pound and foot pound torque wrenches from HF. They both work great, are chrome plated and I store them in the cases they came in. I also leave them in the garage with the rest of my tools, and never leave them setting in a water hole to rust up.

Mine was not in a water hole either. It just had surface rust from the high moisture in the air. And it was in a sealed garage.

Just funnin with ya. Here in Illinois we get our fair share of humid weather as you probably do. Once in a while I spray a little WD 40 on tools that hange on the peg board above my work bench. Helps with the rust.

Might consider a CDI torque wrench next time ... you won't be disappointed. Should stand up to any cat.

The Beams might, but the clickers don't.
Craftsman clicker torque wrenches DO NOT have a lifetime warranty on the entire wrench. I've had 2 failures of the torque mechanism in the last 10 years and they were NOT warranted. The Sears guy said something about the ratchet head being lifetime warranted, but not the torque mechanism. This is not mentioned in their overall hand tool warranty, but is spelled out in the owners manual. A little deceptive?
Here is a quote from a disgruntled reviewer on their website; "It's a Craftsman hand tool, so I just assumed that "Guaranteed Forever" applies and took it back to Sears only to find out that this piece of junk has only a one-year warranty. For $80, this tool should have lasted for more than ten uses and longer than two years. I would *NOT* recommend this tool to anyone, and I will think twice about purchasing Craftsmain again in the future (and at the very least will be scrutinizing the warranty from now on)"

Needless to say I don't buy their torque wrenches anymore either.

Ill second the CDI torque wrenches. They are very accurate and if you check Ebay they can be fairly affordable. Cdi is owned by Snapon and their torque wrenches are the same as Snapon except for the ratchet head.

If you want a cheap torque wrench with a lifetime warranty get the Cman BEAM STYLE wrench. Read my posts, clicker and beam are two different things. Any cheap (including Cman clicker wrench is garbage!)I never said their clickers do, even horrible freight clickers are garbage.

Good for a home DIY, lifetime warranteed, and not Chinese.

CDI does infact make Snap-On Torque wrenches, they are pretty good. A buddy at work has a CDI and it is almost exact to my Snap-on.

Needless to say, it is probably a good idea to read the warranty when you buy a tool, I always do, even on Cman stuff.
