Hertz charges customer $277 to refill Tesla 3 with gas, refuses to admit mistake or issue refund.

Its actually way worse than the headline reads. The guy pre-paid to refuel - presumably so it didn;t need to be fully charged on return, and was still charged.

What vehicle costs $277 to refuel anyway - even in California?

"the receipts for which were seen and confirmed by The Drive—he paid for the "Skip the Pump and Save Time" option, which allows customers to bring their rental cars back without refilling the gas tank. So even if he was driving a car that took gasoline, he shouldn't have been charged an additional refueling fee. OK—mistakes happen, and perhaps the person working at the counter accidentally checked the wrong box. However, when Lee submitted a billing question, Hertz doubled down on the refuel charge, despite the Tesla Model 3 not having a fuel tank to refill, and Lee having already paid for the "Skip the Pump" option."
Hertz has a very high charge per gallon for fuel if you return it not fueled. It was like $9 a gallon when I worked there 10 years ago and it’s calculated on the capacity of the fuel tank. That’s why they upsell the skip the pump option which then charges about market or slightly higher for the area. Same issue though, they charge for the capacity of the fuel tank so it’s only worth it if you return the car on nearly empty.

Someone it the wrong button when checking the car in when they scanned the car back on property. I don’t see how else this happened. Of course Hertz is handling it poorly as usual.

Hertz has been so bad, for so long, this is not a "one-off" or "outlier" situation, and their behavior is largely responsible for the bankruptcy.

I'm battling Hertz for a single damaged wheel, tire and ball joint, as I hit a curb in a Jeep Grand Cherokee base model. No body damage, no structural damage, no loss of value. $22,000 in charges. Their charges were so insane, both my insurance company, and my company's insurance company refused to pay anywhere near that amount. Hertz then put the nearly $12,000 of unpaid charges on my credit report.
I get that and Hertz may be an awful company but this thread wasn't started that way. It cited one particular incident.

If you want to turn this into a blanket Hertz bashing thread then have fun.

Fill 'er up! Pump ethyl if she's workin'....

We've rented from Hertz a few times over the past few years without any problems of any kind. I just fill the car up on the way to the airport and it still shows full on return, so no charge for fuel.
In the case at hand, this is a no-brainer chargeback for any credit card issuer.
The laughable intransigence on the part of Hertz is inexplicable.

I was simply relating my experience and the conclusion I've drawn from 40 years of being a faithful Hertz Gold Club member. In my experienced opinion, Hertz went downhill fast, from best to worst. The OP's example is just one of many. In the end, information like this matters, as people can then make an informed choice when they rent a car.

Remember, as a corporate jet guy, I traveled all over and often rented 2 to 3 times per week. I understood what worked for me, what cars I liked and for many years, enjoyed being able to show up and go, no waiting in line, no drama.

As always, others have different experiences.
