I've been meaning to post about this ever since I changed the oil on my new 300. When I did, I noticed the cartridge filter system on the Pentastar V6 is from Hengst in Germany.

Neat. Is that an oil-to-water oil cooler?
Same with the system on my Cruze. It even has "Hengst" cast into the metal filter housing.
I like changing a top-mounted cartridge. I was sort of suspicious, but now I like it. It's nice not having a gusher of used oil from a horizontally-mounted canister filter when it gets removed! Less mess, don't have to get under the car to change the oil, what's not to like?

It's far more likely to cross-thread a spin-on filter than the cartridge cap with its 24mm cast-in nut and massive threads. If somebody manages to cross-thread it, it'll crack the nylon cap when Gorilla-Zilla the Lube Tech tries to tighten it down. And, it's difficult to drop something into the opened canister housing when it's angled and up very high in the engine bay.
For the cap, yeah, it sucks having to get a replacement if it ever does crack. It's still much cheaper than re-threading a bungled spin-on mount.

Yeah, it was also a Hengst assembly on my 2007 Chevy Cobalt Ecotec 2.2L filter housing. Hengst has got a real cash cow there.
edit- Is that a cooler built onto that Chrysler assembly? Cool!

Yeah, it was also a Hengst assembly on my 2007 Chevy Cobalt Ecotec 2.2L filter housing. Hengst has got a real cash cow there.
