HELP WITH OIL CHOICE NEEDED

Okay after using Mobil 1 in my vehicles for years I am thinking about switching to a Conventional oil in my 04 4.7 Toyota Tundra.

Mainly due to the new increase in price!

I live and drive in the high desert area of Southern California. Normal summertime daytime temps range anywhere from 80 degrees up to 110. Night time temps around 50 degrees.

Winter time it gets down to the teens ocasionally, but averages in the 30's. Because of the rural area, most of my driving is at highway speeds. Minimum distance traveled is normally around 20 miles. I change oil every 5000 miles and use a factory Toyota filter.

If I make the switch, I want to use a light oil (5-30, 5-40) and I want to use the best. Please advise. I also need an opinion on the new Mobile 7500 mile conventional oil.

Based on the type of driving you do, mainly highway and the temps you see, personally, I'd run Mobil 1 0w40 and extend the change interval to 7,500 miles.

He says he does not want to use Mobil 1, so i guess the Mobil 1 0w-40 is out of the question. The Pennzoil or GTX would be a good chioce in hot weather. What does the book spec? I would use a 5w30 if that is what the manual says.

Mobil 1 has not really increased in price here. Are you sure you are not confusing it with the more expensive, new Mobil 1 Extended Performance product??

I think maybe he is looking at the Mobil 1 Extended Performance. Standard Mobil 1 hasn't changed in price here either.

Extending the drain interval 2,500 miles, which I'm guessing the oil could handle based on his driving, would save $$$$. If you are set on Dino & 5k changes, I agree w/ a previous poster who said GTX.

You spent a small fortune on an '04 Tundra,yet you're looking to save a couple of bucks on an oil change?
Actually switching to conventional will cost you more in the long run.
Stay with Mobil 1 and go 7500 miles like edvanp suggested.

the mobil 7500 is group 3/PAO syn blend. good buy for $2.18/qt at walmart. no worries using this oil for 5k or even the advertised 7500 miles for your climate and 20 mile trips.

I am told that I am so tight with money that I squeak when I walk....even so, I completely agree with the idea that cheap oil in expensive vehicles makes little sense.

Buy M1 at Walmart and it's cheap enough, I should think.

Lets see the math.

Muleskinner, I'd recomend using whatever conventional you feel comfortable with, change it every 4,000 to 5,000 miles, and use 10w30 in the hot summer and 5w30 only during the coldest winter months. If you have Checker Auto in your area, you can routinly get Chevron Supreme (one of the best conventionals made) for $.59/quart. You just can't beat oil changes for under 6 bucks, and if your looking to save $$$$$, that's the why to go IMO. You aren't sacrificing a thing in terms of engine longevity as long as you keep the oil change intervals reasonable for your ambient temps/driving conditions.

Shoot Mobil 1 0W40 changed between 7 and 10K seems like the answer to me.

I'm looking at the new Mobil 1 extended service oil. It appears Mobile will phase out the standard M1 in the future.

Walmart sells the regular M1 for $4.89 a quart here. The new stuff is $5.30 a quart.

I've always been a firm believer in synthtics, but from what I have read on this forum it sounds like regular Conventional has improved big time, making the difference in costs questionable. This is why I am considering a change.

My driving style and maintenance schedual, plus the fact that the Toyota 4.7 has been proven to be easy on oil, makes me think a good Conventional oil may be just as good for my situation. That is why I am asking for opinions here.

Or,,,should I use the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5-40? It still sells for $4.89 per quart here.
