1) I want to replace the thermostat so what's the recommended way to drain the coolant prior? Not going to flush by the way
2) Would you recommend a certain coolant?

Asian red (aka Toyota LLC)
There's a drain on the radiator, and two block drains, usually draining the radiator with the pressure cap removed will get you there

I would have went with an OEM T-stat
Given "Murray" doesn't actually make the part, there's a good chance that there's either a Stant or a Motorad unit inside the box. Either should work just fine and are of good quality, the Motorad getting a slight nod.I would have went with an OEM T-stat
Nope, don't use Murray Stat or Stant Stat.
Maybe this one then
I wouldn't mess with the block drains on a 27 year old car that probably has never had it loosened before. Snap it off and you have big problems. On the other hand, I just loosened the drain on my 86 Volvo.Didn't realize there were two block drains. But are you suggesting that just draining the radiator should suffice?
Surprised the censors didn't cock block you. It's called a drain valve in polite company.Drain from the drain cock in the radiator.
Unbranded no-name? I would avoid. If you already bought the Murry and don't want to get Toyota, not a big deal if it's not hard to replace.Maybe this one then

Motorad bought out stant. They seem to have completely killed off the stant line.Given "Murray" doesn't actually make the part, there's a good chance that there's either a Stant or a Motorad unit inside the box. Either should work just fine and are of good quality, the Motorad getting a slight nod.
I had noticed I was having a harder time than usual finding a stant super stat a while back... That's really unfortunate news at least to me. Every Motorad tstat I've ever tried has been garbage.. Had good luck with OEM and StantMotorad bought out stant. They seem to have completely killed off the stant line.
