I just rebuilt a small block Ford stroker, 347." I want to run it daily and sometimes hard at the dragstrip on the weekends. It will see as high as 6800rpm, hyd roller cam, EFI, 11:1 comp.

I am shopping for the most appropriate Schaeffer's oil. Why Schaeffer's? My machine shop just started carrying it. That led to me finding this awesome website. After doing some reading and research here I think the Schaeffer's looks to be promising. I am open to other brands, but can't afford Redline or Royal Purple (2 kids now). I will be running a Motorcraft or K&N oil filter.

My machine shop started selling Schaeffer's 20w-50 racing formula and 20w-50 Supreme7000. I am not sure if they are the same oil? I could not locate the part# on the bottles.

I have been reviewing most all related threads here concerning Schaeffer's motor oil, but am having a hard time finding info on the 20w-50.

I am thinking the 20w-50 may be too thick for my motor, which has fairly tight clearances.

Thanks in advance for any advice,
Gary

I am thinking your right . Don't forget you have hydraulic lifters that are engineered around viscosity as well .

Welcome to the forum , land of many opinions on how to lube a race motor and some without any direct experience in doing so .

So is the 20w-50 the only oil your shop carries ?

What are other oils available to you where you live that are in your price range ?

EDIT :

Your profile says you are a Mustang tuner . What other oils have you used with success in the past ? What oils besides Redline are some of your aquaintances with similar engines using w/o grenading ? Just curious there .

Supreme is syn blend while the other is %100 paraffin base. i am aware of a lot of racers in the south, particularily on the hooters series, that run 5-30 10-30 and the 15-40 depending on the track.

Thanks for the advice!

My oil normally operates at a temp of 190*-205*, sometimes as high as 230* at the track. I figure the 10w30 or 15w40 would be better suited for my motor.

I have most commercial oils available. I haven't seen Amsoil out here, but most others mentioned on this site I have seen.

My motor shop only purchased 20w-50, maybe out of ignorance or a good deal by a sales rep, lol. Really, I am not sure why they only started out with the 20w-50 racing and S7000.

I have used Royal Purple and Redline before, and dyno'd them back to back on my previous motor, a similar stroked 342" SBF. I ran RP Racing21 and Red Line 5w30 in those tests. Unfortunately, I never knew about oil testing, so I can't say what the technical end result was. However, the Red Line, at similar oil temps (215*), and water temps (180*) made an average of 2-3+ rwhp. I can't say about longevity either, as I frequently changed the oil. On a side note, the RP21 made my motor somewhat noisy.

I ran Mobil 1 0w30 on my previous motor up until the rings gave out. That oil, BTW, gave the same power as the Red Line on the dyno. I used Mobil 1 pretty much exclusively in my motors, maybe different weights, but same brand, with no noticeable adverse effects.

Great feedback from real time use . Sounds as if the other motor wanted a slightly thicker oil .

The 0w30 lubed motor just exactly as one should wear out . No doubt a well built one . Also shows the HT/HS of the Mobil 1 0w30 was sufficient to protect the bearings and the formula kept the valvetrain alive .

Again , welcome to the forum and you brought some data with you too

no used oil analysis, but fwiw a friend/customer with a vorteched 347 runs schaeffer's 15w40 for 3k mile intervals. his car made 540rwhp on pump gas, and the vortech's gears are lubed with oil from the engine, so a used oil analysis would be great. but i keep forgetting to leave him one of my blackstone sample bottles.

anyhow, no problems in 2+ years. of course, when i was in the industry i probably "built" 50 cars, and none of them ever suffered an oil-related failure regardless of oil used.

Just a recommendation, since you're going with Schaeffer's, I would use the 10W30 Supreme 7000 for "running-in" and then switch to the #700 for awhile.

After about 15k, you could then try the 20W50 blend.

AT about 5k on the motor, sample for used oil analysis. I would stay with each oil weight for at least three OCI's to obtain a baseline.
