Help w/Decoding & Identifying Fram XG8A?

So in recent times I've stepped away from the oil and filter discipline. I was in auto pilot so to speak. Then more recently I check in to find many previous top oil filter performers now out of favor including my old favorite, the Fram Ultra. In fact I just ordered a pack of six XG8A's from eBay vendor SAE Parts Co., of Michigan. I've bought from them in the past and it seemed to be okay. So what I'd like to find out is if these filters are older stock, pre-FIRST BRANDS GROUP LLC. Is this what people mean when they say "OG Fram Ultra"? I haven't figured that one out yet.

Anyway, the filters are currently in rout and I can return them upon inspection. Just asking what I should be looking for?

Thanks in advance!

If you have metal screen visible through holes on the inside tube-nothing to worry about. All the XG8As I have are the OG mesh ones with the pink media. No mesh means sprayed on “synthetic” over regular blend media, I wouldn’t use them for over 7500. I’ve personally done 20K on the metal backed full synthetic OG Ultra (XG3600).

OG Ultra means the XG with wire backed two ply full synthetic media, and before FB cheapened the media to current type. It didn't happen immediately with FB ownership and took time to implement over all applications. Speculating, what you will receive is current XG media filter. XG still a serviceable filter with imo and in my observation ~7500 mi "max" fci. If you're very lucky with a very slow moving application my speculation is wrong, and buy a lottery ticket (j/k). :)

Thanks. I do currently have one last Fram XG7317 I bought last year. I do not see "wire" behind the louvers and the filter media looks like what a typical paper would look like.

You're welcome. Reads like with the 7317 at least you got current XG media filter. Imo, media best described as thin synthetic layer backed by blended media layer for support. 'Perhaps' you'll be luckier with the 8A filters.

I got the XG8A filters today.

There's good news and bad news. The good news is the one filter I looked at has wire backed pinkish media. The bad news is that this filter appeared to be dropped out of the bottom of the box and the filter media rattled around inside the can. A couple of the other boxes had the same appearance while some others were different. I elected to send them all back for a refund. Oh well, it was a nice thought.

^^^ Yeah, never use a filter where the guts rattle when shook.
