Very true that I do use only Mobil 1 oils as they have performed very well for me the last 36 years, however the differance between me and you is:

1) I never say stupid things about other products that are untrue.

2) In fact I never critize other products, because they are all very good these days.

3) I actually know what makes an engine go round and round.

Wouldn't switching from a 5w-20 to a 5w30 make engine noise quieter? It's looking to me like their are some things I do think it could be, and things I don't think it could be:

Probably could be:
1. Something wrong with the vehicle that is completely unrelated to oil choice.
2. Because it's a Dodge... with high mileage...

Probably is not:
1. Due to oil filter pre-fill. *facepalm*
2. Due to using one grade up (5w-20 to 5w30).

Maybe/iffy:
1. Placebo effect.
2. *cough* Mobil 1 5w30 could be noisy

I thought that Moly and Zinc (either one or both) were supposed to quiet engine noise, hence why alot of Jeep drivers use Rotella, or other hdeo's...

If noise were linked to wear, Merk's post above yours would be covered with glitter akin to a break in lube.

Merk, you should try Delvac 1 ESP 5w-40. It really is thick, rather than pretending to be thick like SN/GF-5 10w30, it's cheap, and it sounds the same as every other oil I tried.

Advising and scaring someone into taking out perfectly good oil is going beyond trying being cute/funny/stupid, it is being flat-out irresponsible. You really, really need to stop.

When something mechanical is noisy, that's a telltale sign that the machine or mechanical device is not getting lubricated properly.

Deja Vu! Somebody named Frank used to say *exactly* the same thing about another product!!


Big difference between cleaning effect on lifter/adjusters and getting noisy because oil is getting to places in the engine it has no been in a long time.
If a moving part of the engine receives no lube its toast in short order.
A sticking lifter isn't moving its stuck but the wear surfaces are still being lubed.

Well im jumping into this p match a little late but my 2 cents worth...
I have driven 2 vehicles well over 100k and 3 over 200k using M1. None of them had any oil related issues with the engine. They all made some kind of "noise". V8, V6, I4, & H4. 1988-2006. American and import...
Nothing wrong with M1. But ask your self this...
if there was a real problem, don't you think you would hear about it somewhere else other than user opinions on various forums?
Just saying...

I'll say it again, clogged cat.

I've had 5 Dodge Mini vans over the years, 2 of them developed a noise at over 100,000 miles under acceleration, both caused by a clogged cat.

Well, fwiw, Mag1 is some good oil.

I have seen different engine sounds between brands in the same weight. When I had Citgo synthetic blend in my car it was loud at start up and fairly quiet when warm, but really hard to start in the cold. I switched to Valvoline Maxlife and the engine was a little quieter at start than the citgo, and got a little louder when it warmed up.
Now it has Quaker State Defy in it. I hear what kind of sounds like a rod knock or piston slap at start up. I do not believe the knocking sound is caused by the oil at all, quite the opposite actually. The upper end of the engine is so much quieter now that I can actually hear it. It seems to go away when it warms up.
